Physical intimacy is just as important for women as it is for men. While it is completely normal to experience a temporary lack of interest in sex, a prolonged decrease in sexual desire should not be ignored, health experts say.
According to Dr Aditi Bedi, Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, sexual relationships are not only about physical connection for women but also deeply linked to emotional and mental well-being. A healthy intimate life helps strengthen relationships and contributes to overall physical and psychological health.
Stress and Mental Pressure
One of the most common reasons women avoid intimacy is mental stress. When stress levels remain high for long periods, the body produces excess cortisol, also known as the stress hormone. This interferes with the balance of sex hormones like estrogen, leading to a noticeable drop in libido.
Emotional Disconnect With Partner
For many women, emotional closeness is a prerequisite for physical intimacy. If they feel misunderstood, emotionally neglected or unsupported by their partner, their interest in sexual relations often declines. A lack of communication and emotional bonding can gradually create distance in intimate relationships.

Dr Bedi explains that many women feel uncomfortable expressing their needs or desires openly. When partners fail to understand each other’s expectations or ignore emotional cues, intimacy can start feeling forced or unfulfilling, causing women to withdraw from sexual activity.
Health Conditions and Medication Side Effects
Certain medical conditions and medications can also reduce sexual desire. Iron deficiency, for instance, affects blood circulation and oxygen supply to organs, including the reproductive system, which can lower libido. Chronic illnesses and hormonal disorders may have a similar effect.
Sleep Deprivation and Hormonal Imbalance
Lack of adequate sleep disrupts the body’s hormonal balance, leading to fatigue and reduced sexual interest. Poor sleep patterns affect mood, energy levels and emotional stability, all of which play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy sex drive.
Breaking the Taboo Is Important
Doctors emphasise that sexual health should not be treated as a taboo topic. Open discussions, accurate information and timely medical consultation can help address many issues related to intimacy.
“If low sexual desire persists, women should seek medical advice rather than ignoring the problem,” Dr Bedi advises. “Understanding the root cause is the first step toward improving both physical and emotional well-being.”
