‘I Was So Upset and Disappointed’: Suhana Khan on Crying After School Play Rejection and Why Setbacks Hurt So Deeply

Rejection is often framed as a necessary step toward success, but experiencing it in real time can feel painfully personal—especially when it arrives unexpectedly. For many people, moments of disappointment become emotional turning points, revealing desires and motivations that were previously unclear.

Actor Suhana Khan, daughter of Shah Rukh Khan, recently reflected on one such moment from her school years that reshaped how she understood her own aspirations. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar India, she revisited a rejection she faced while studying at Ardingly College in the UK—an experience that quietly clarified her passion for performance.

A Rejection That Changed Everything

Despite growing up around cinema, Suhana Khan has shared that acting was not always an obvious or natural ambition for her. At one point, she even questioned whether it was a path she was being nudged toward rather than one she truly wanted.

That uncertainty shifted during a school play audition. Hoping for a more prominent role, she was instead placed in the chorus. The outcome surprised her—not because of the result, but because of how deeply it affected her.

“I was so upset and disappointed,” she recalled. “And I think that’s when I knew that I really wanted to play those parts and enjoy the thrill of being on stage.”

She later admitted that she cried alone in her room, taken aback by the intensity of her emotions. That reaction, she realised, was telling. The disappointment did not stem from external expectations, but from an internal desire she had not fully acknowledged before.

When Setbacks Reveal What Truly Matters

Looking back, Suhana says that experience helped her understand where her motivation came from. “Curiosity, purpose, but most of all, passion. It’s all of it,” she shared, describing what drives her today.

Her journey later included formal training at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and professional acting opportunities. But the emotional clarity sparked by that early rejection remains a defining moment—one that mirrors a universal human experience.

Why Rejection Hurts So Much

According to Gurleen Baruah, existential analyst at That Culture Thing, rejection often feels overwhelming because people tend to internalise it.

“Rejection hurts so much because we often can’t separate the task, performance, or role from who we are,” she explains. “It doesn’t feel like ‘I didn’t get selected’; it feels like ‘I wasn’t enough.’”

This emotional overlap intensifies the pain. Yet, Baruah notes, the depth of the reaction can also serve as a signal. “If it didn’t matter, it wouldn’t hurt this much. Strong emotional reactions are often clues to our values, dreams, or sense of belonging.”

Passion Versus Pressure: What Setbacks Teach Us

Early disappointments, Baruah adds, often force people to pause and reflect. When something doesn’t work out, it raises an important question: Why did this hurt so deeply?

“Some goals come from family expectations, social pressure, or comparison,” she says. “But if you still want to try again even after failing, it usually means the interest is genuine. If the motivation disappears once validation is gone, it may not have been your dream to begin with.”

Over time, such moments quietly help people distinguish between ambitions driven by external approval and those rooted in authentic passion.

Healthy Ways to Process Rejection

Processing rejection in a healthy way is key to building resilience. Baruah suggests starting with something simple but often avoided: allowing yourself to feel the pain.

“Let yourself feel hurt and accept that rejection sucks,” she says. “That’s not weakness.”

Practices like journaling, deep breathing, or talking through emotions with trusted friends can help bring feelings to the surface. With time and distance, perspective develops naturally.

“That’s what real resilience looks like,” Baruah explains. “Not avoiding pain, but moving through it.”

The Indya Story Perspective

Suhana Khan’s reflection is a reminder that rejection is not always a setback—it can be a quiet moment of self-discovery. Long before success becomes visible, disappointment often reveals what truly matters.

Whether on a school stage or in everyday life, these moments can shape identity, strengthen emotional clarity, and guide people toward paths chosen not by pressure, but by genuine desire.
