Black coffee has become a staple in modern gym culture and is often treated as a shortcut to faster fat loss. But according to Dr Anshuman Kaushal, surgeon at Apollo Delhi and a well-known health educator, many fitness enthusiasts are misusing caffeine without understanding its biological limits.
In a recent discussion, Dr Kaushal observed how gym routines now frequently involve a dumbbell in one hand and black coffee in the other, with the belief that caffeine acts like a powerful fat-burning supplement. That belief, he warns, is only partly true and potentially dangerous when overdone.
How Black Coffee Supports Fat Metabolism
Dr Kaushal explains that black coffee does not instantly melt fat. Instead, it supports metabolic efficiency through two important compounds: caffeine and chlorogenic acid.
Caffeine stimulates fat oxidation and energy release, while chlorogenic acid improves liver fat processing and enzyme function. Research suggests that two to four cups per day can reduce liver fat, improve metabolic enzyme levels, and enhance the body’s natural fat-clearing process.

When Caffeine Becomes Harmful
The same caffeine that boosts metabolism can also trigger the body’s stress response when consumed in excess. High caffeine intake increases adrenaline, cortisol, and heart rate, pushing the body into a stressed state rather than optimal workout mode.
Dr Kaushal explains that coffee acts like a drug and that dosage determines whether it works as a benefit or becomes harmful. Excessive intake may cause sleeplessness, heart palpitations, acidity, migraines, calcium loss, and strain on the nervous system.
He notes that some gym-goers consume five to six cups before workouts, which does not improve fat loss and instead increases health risks.
Correct Dosage for Safe Fat Burning
Dr Kaushal recommends limiting total coffee intake to three to four cups per day, which equals roughly 300 to 400 mg of caffeine, the generally accepted safe upper limit.

He also emphasizes that increasing caffeine beyond this limit does not accelerate metabolism and only places unnecessary stress on the body.
According to him, fat burning is the result of proper metabolic balance, not excessive stimulant use. Moderation, he says, is not boring, it is simply biochemistry done correctly.
