New Year’s Eve is usually about indulgence, fireworks and late-night celebrations. But for thousands of Indians, the last night of 2025 was about something far more comforting: khichdi.

According to data shared by Swiggy, 9,410 people ordered khichdi on 31 December, turning the humble comfort dish into one of the most surprising food trends of the night.

Swiggy’s official account summed it up humorously:
“Even today, 9,410 people are ordering khichdi. These people will be asleep by 10 pm.”

One Bengaluru customer even ordered protein powder worth ₹41,000, proving that some welcomed 2026 with strict fitness goals already in place.

The Wild Side of Orders

As the night went on, India’s ordering patterns became more adventurous:

  • A man in Patiala placed over 200 orders, including 108 packs of Kurkure
  • A user in Nagpur made 93 orders in one day
  • Someone in Surat ordered from 22 different restaurants

Swiggy CEO Rohit Kapoor reacted:
“Not orders. Life choices.”

Biryani Still Rules

By early evening, over 90,000 burgers were delivered.
But biryani dominated the night — with 2,18,993 plates ordered by 7:30 pm.

Swiggy crowned it simply:
“King fr.”

Gold, Gifts & Grand Gestures

Swiggy’s co-founder noted that nearly 1 in 9 orders were placed for friends or family, highlighting how New Year’s Eve is increasingly about shared moments and thoughtful gifting.

A Year of Sharing

In all of 2025, over 6.6 crore orders were placed for others on Swiggy — a growing signal that food is becoming India’s favourite way of saying “I care.”

What This Says About India

The night of 31 December 2025 revealed something deeper:
India celebrates on its own terms — sometimes with fireworks and champagne, sometimes with khichdi and early bedtime.

And both feel just right.
