New Delhi – The sari, long regarded as traditional attire, is making a bold comeback in modern workplaces, embraced by Gen Z women as a symbol of confidence, elegance, and professional poise. Once reserved for formal events or cultural celebrations, the sari is now being reimagined as everyday office wear.

The Sari: From Tradition to Office Staple

Indian women have historically worn saris in every context imaginable – from fields to offices, markets to battlefields. Yet in corporate spaces, saris had largely disappeared from daily routines, reserved only for Traditional Day or ceremonial occasions. That’s changing thanks to a new generation of professionals who are reclaiming the garment for everyday work.

Social media platforms, especially Instagram Reels, have become a hub for #FirstSari looks. Young women share tips for casual drapes, debate the merits of shapewear, and provide advice on choosing light yet authentic silk. The sari is no longer just occasion wear—it’s becoming a statement of personal style and professional empowerment.

Empowerment in Drapes

Varsha Anantharaman, 22, a textile designer from Chennai, recalls her first office sari experience: “It was a handloom cotton sari from a craft exhibition. I felt confident and proud.”

Pairing saris with cropped tops, T-shirts, or tank tops has made them comfortable and versatile for work. “When I wear a sari, colleagues engage with me differently. Conversations shift from fashion to ideas,” says Anantharaman. Her preferred styles include handloom saris with block prints and hand-painted kalamkari, draped to reflect her personality while maintaining office practicality.

Modern Inspiration from Media and Fashion

Popular culture is influencing the workwear resurgence. In Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Alia Bhatt sports chiffon saris with bralettes and a bold bindi, while Sobhita Dhulipala’s characters in Made in Heaven showcase structured blouses paired with saris, projecting authority and style.

Sari designers are adapting to this trend. Prachi Seksaria, founder of Moora, notes, “Gen Z wants minimal prints, bold colours, and pre-draped work-friendly saris. They’re pairing saris with denims, sneakers, and belts to balance modernity with tradition.”

Popular work-friendly drapes include the ‘tucked and belted’ style and half-pallu sari, designed for practicality without compromising elegance. Pre-draped saris with pockets and comfort-fit blouses cater to the fast-paced lifestyle of young professionals.

The Sari Goes Global

The garment’s influence is not confined to India. The Consulate General of India in New York recently hosted the second edition of Saree Goes Global at Times Square, celebrating the sari with attendees from India, Bangladesh, the UK, the US, and beyond. Pragya Singh, Consul and Head of Chancery, called the sari “one of the world’s oldest continuously worn garments, with a history spanning thousands of years.”
