Shailene Woodley has looked back on the disappointment of learning that her scenes as Mary Jane Watson would not appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, despite the role being a childhood dream for the actor.
More than a decade after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 reached theaters, Shailene Woodley is reflecting on one of the most unexpected turns in her acting career.
Woodley had been cast as Mary Jane Watson, one of the most iconic characters in Spider-Man history, and filmed scenes alongside Andrew Garfield, who played Peter Parker in Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man franchise.
But those scenes never made it into the final version of the 2014 superhero film.
Speaking during a recent edition of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Conversations series, Woodley recalled her reaction to finding out that her character had been removed from the movie. According to the actor, she did not learn about the decision until roughly a year after filming.
Shailene Woodley Says Playing Mary Jane Was a Dream
For Woodley, the casting carried special meaning.
The Big Little Lies star explained that Spider-Man had long been her favorite superhero and that Mary Jane was a character she loved while growing up. Landing the part therefore felt like an especially exciting milestone.
Woodley said she had filmed approximately three scenes with Garfield before receiving the surprising update about her role.
The actor recalled being told that she would not ultimately appear in the movie, a development that came after filming had already been completed.
While Woodley later approached the experience with humor, the moment was clearly a disappointing one. The role had represented an opportunity to bring one of her favorite childhood characters to life on screen.
Why Was Mary Jane Cut From ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’?
According to Woodley, she was told that the creative team wanted to concentrate on the existing storyline between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.
Garfield’s version of Peter Parker had already developed a major romantic relationship with Gwen, played by Emma Stone. Introducing Mary Jane in the same film could have added another significant character and relationship dynamic to a story that was already handling multiple plotlines.
Woodley said the plan, as it was explained to her, was to potentially introduce Mary Jane later in the franchise after Gwen Stacy’s storyline had reached its conclusion.
However, the future installment that might have brought Woodley’s Mary Jane back was never made.
The actor also acknowledged that she could only describe the explanation she was given at the time. Looking back, she joked that there might have been another reason for the decision, even humorously suggesting that the filmmakers could simply have decided that her performance did not work.
Marc Webb Previously Said the Story Needed to Be Streamlined
The decision to remove Mary Jane had been discussed publicly around the time of the film’s release.
Director Marc Webb had indicated that Woodley’s character was cut as part of an effort to streamline the story and maintain the film’s focus.
The sequel introduced and developed several major characters while continuing the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. Ultimately, the filmmakers chose not to include Mary Jane in the final version.
Woodley had filmed only a small number of scenes, making the character’s removal possible without significantly changing the completed storyline.
Still, the decision ended what could have been the beginning of a major new chapter for the actor in the Spider-Man universe.
Mary Jane’s Important Place in Spider-Man History
Mary Jane Watson is among the most recognizable characters associated with Spider-Man.
In the comics, she has played a major role in Peter Parker’s life and has been adapted across multiple versions of the Spider-Man story.
Before Woodley’s casting, Kirsten Dunst portrayed Mary Jane opposite Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi’s hugely successful Spider-Man trilogy. Dunst’s portrayal helped establish Mary Jane as one of the defining romantic characters of the early superhero movie era.
Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man films took a different approach by centering Peter Parker’s primary romantic storyline on Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone.
Gwen Stacy has also appeared in previous Spider-Man film adaptations, including Spider-Man 3, where Bryce Dallas Howard portrayed the character.
The Amazing Spider-Man series was expected to expand its world further, and Woodley’s casting suggested that Mary Jane might eventually become an important part of that larger story.
That storyline, however, never had the chance to develop.
What Happened to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3’?
After The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony’s plans for the franchise changed significantly.
A third film featuring Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker did not move forward as initially expected. The studio eventually collaborated with Marvel Studios on a new cinematic direction for Spider-Man, resulting in Tom Holland taking on the role of Peter Parker within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That shift meant the storyline involving Garfield’s Spider-Man, Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy and Woodley’s planned introduction as Mary Jane was effectively left behind.
For Woodley, the cancellation of the franchise’s next chapter meant there was no opportunity for her character to be reintroduced in the way she had reportedly been told might happen.
The result remains one of the most intriguing examples of a major character being filmed for a blockbuster but never appearing in the finished movie.
Andrew Garfield Eventually Returned as Spider-Man
Although The Amazing Spider-Man series did not receive a conventional third installment, Garfield eventually returned to the role.
He reprised Peter Parker in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, appearing alongside Tobey Maguire’s version of the character in a multiverse story that brought together actors from different Spider-Man film eras.
Garfield has since spoken positively about returning to the character, describing the experience as emotionally meaningful. He has also indicated that he would consider playing Spider-Man again under the right creative circumstances.
His return renewed audience interest in his version of Peter Parker and prompted ongoing discussion about whether elements from the Amazing Spider-Man universe could ever be revisited.
For fans, that conversation naturally raises another question: could Woodley’s Mary Jane ever have been part of that world?
A Fascinating Hollywood “What If”
Woodley’s experience offers a reminder that even high-profile movie roles can change dramatically between filming and release.
Actors can audition, be cast, complete scenes and participate in a production without knowing whether their work will ultimately remain in the final cut. Changes in editing, storytelling priorities and long-term franchise plans can reshape a film long after shooting has ended.
In Woodley’s case, the circumstances were particularly striking because Mary Jane was not simply another supporting role.
It was a character she had wanted to play and a part connected to a superhero she had loved since childhood.
More than 12 years later, the story remains a memorable “what if” in modern superhero movie history.
Woodley filmed her scenes. She worked with Andrew Garfield. She was cast as one of Spider-Man’s most famous characters.
But audiences never got to see her interpretation of Mary Jane Watson on screen.
As Woodley looks back on the experience today, her story remains a fascinating glimpse into the unpredictable nature of Hollywood filmmaking—and a reminder that sometimes a dream role can disappear before audiences ever get the chance to see it.
