Shailene Woodley has reflected on the disappointment of losing her role as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, calling the Spider-Man character one of her childhood favorites.
More than a decade after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 arrived in theaters, Shailene Woodley is looking back at one of the biggest disappointments of her early Hollywood career.
The actor was cast as Mary Jane Watson opposite Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker and filmed scenes for the superhero sequel. However, audiences never saw Woodley’s version of the iconic Spider-Man character on the big screen.
During a recent appearance in the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Conversations series, Woodley opened up about learning that her scenes had been removed from the final version of the 2014 film.
For Woodley, the disappointment was especially significant because playing Mary Jane had been a personal dream.
A Dream Role That Never Reached the Screen
Woodley said Spider-Man had long been her favorite superhero, while Mary Jane Watson was one of her favorite characters growing up.
Landing the role in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was therefore a major moment for the actor.
She recalled filming approximately three scenes with Andrew Garfield before later receiving unexpected news about her character’s future in the franchise.
According to Woodley, she learned around a year after filming that she would no longer appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Recalling the experience, she described the conversation with humor, but also made clear how surprising the decision was.
Woodley said she was told that the filmmakers had introduced a significant number of new characters and wanted to focus on the existing storyline involving Garfield’s Peter Parker and Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy.
The decision, as it was explained to Woodley, was to delay Mary Jane’s introduction until later.
Why Mary Jane Was Reportedly Removed
Woodley said she was told that the filmmakers wanted to wait before bringing Mary Jane into Peter Parker’s story.
The reasoning reportedly centered on the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone. The creative team did not want Mary Jane’s presence to complicate the romantic storyline already established in the sequel.
Woodley explained that the plan, as she understood it at the time, was to introduce Mary Jane after Gwen Stacy’s storyline had reached its conclusion.
However, those plans never came to fruition.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released in May 2014, but the franchise’s planned continuation did not move forward as originally expected. Sony later entered into a landmark arrangement with Marvel Studios that resulted in a new version of Spider-Man being introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Tom Holland taking over the role of Peter Parker.
As a result, Woodley’s Mary Jane Watson never had the opportunity to return in a later installment.
“Who Knows What the Truth Is?”
Looking back, Woodley acknowledged that she could only speak to what she was told at the time.
She said the official explanation was that adding Mary Jane to the film’s existing storyline could have created complications, particularly because the sequel was already handling multiple characters and major plot developments.
But the actor also joked that there could have been another reason for the decision.
Woodley humorously suggested that perhaps her performance simply did not work for the filmmakers, adding that she could not be completely certain about what happened behind the scenes.
Her comments highlight the unpredictable nature of filmmaking, where scenes and even entire characters can be removed long after the cameras stop rolling.
Producer Matt Tolmach Previously Addressed the Decision
The explanation given to Woodley was broadly consistent with comments made publicly by producer Matt Tolmach at the time of the film’s release.
Speaking to Variety during the 2014 New York premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Tolmach said the production ultimately had more story than it could effectively include in a single movie.
The screenplay was already packed with characters and narrative developments, and the filmmakers decided that Mary Jane’s storyline would not fit within the final version.
Rather than attempting to force the character into an already crowded plot, the decision was made to remove the storyline entirely.
For Woodley, that creative choice meant losing a role she had been particularly excited to play.
Mary Jane Watson’s History on the Big Screen
Mary Jane Watson is one of the most recognizable characters in the Spider-Man universe. Over the decades, she has been an important part of Peter Parker’s world in comics, animation and film adaptations.
Before Woodley was cast in the role, Kirsten Dunst famously portrayed Mary Jane opposite Tobey Maguire in director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.
Dunst’s version of the character became one of the defining portrayals of the early 2000s superhero film era.
Woodley’s casting generated interest because it would have introduced a new interpretation of Mary Jane for Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man series.
The character’s absence from the final cut therefore remains one of the more intriguing pieces of superhero movie casting history.
While Woodley filmed scenes and was publicly connected to the role, audiences never got the chance to see how her version of Mary Jane would have developed alongside Garfield’s Peter Parker.
The End of a Planned Storyline
At the time The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was being developed, the franchise was positioned for further expansion. Mary Jane’s introduction appeared to be part of a larger plan for future installments.
But Hollywood franchise plans can change rapidly.
Following the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the direction of Sony’s Spider-Man universe shifted. The planned continuation featuring Garfield’s version of Peter Parker ultimately did not proceed as originally envisioned.
Instead, Spider-Man was later rebooted for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Tom Holland making his debut as the character.
That shift effectively ended the possibility of Woodley’s Mary Jane appearing in a future Amazing Spider-Man installment.
For fans, it remains an intriguing “what if” scenario: What would Woodley’s interpretation of Mary Jane Watson have looked like if the franchise had continued?
Woodley Reflects on Her Career and Craft
Woodley’s comments about The Amazing Spider-Man 2 came during a wider SAG-AFTRA Foundation conversation focused on her career and approach to acting.
The nearly 90-minute discussion covered a range of projects from different stages of her career, including The Descendants, Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars, Big Little Lies, Dumb Money and the second season of Hulu’s Paradise.
Her reflections offered a broader look at an acting career that has moved between independent films, major studio productions, young adult franchises and acclaimed television dramas.
The Mary Jane story, however, remains one of the most surprising chapters in that journey because of how close Woodley came to becoming part of one of Hollywood’s biggest superhero franchises.

More than 12 years after filming her scenes, Woodley’s experience remains a reminder of how much can change between production and a movie’s theatrical release.
Actors may spend weeks or months developing a character, only for storylines to be shortened, reworked or removed during the editing process. In Woodley’s case, the decision meant that a role she had dreamed of playing never reached audiences.
Her story also offers a fascinating glimpse into the creative decisions behind blockbuster filmmaking.
The filmmakers reportedly felt that the sequel already had too much story to tell. The established relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy remained central to the film, leaving little room to introduce another major character such as Mary Jane.
Whether Mary Jane would eventually appear in a future film was, at one point, apparently part of the discussion. But the franchise changed direction before that possibility could become reality.
For Shailene Woodley, the experience remains a memorable career disappointment. For Spider-Man fans, it continues to be one of the most interesting unanswered questions surrounding the Amazing Spider-Man franchise.
Woodley may have filmed her scenes as Mary Jane Watson, but the final version of the story never allowed audiences to see her take on the beloved character.
