Who Is Simran Bala? Meet the First Woman to Lead a CRPF Unit on Republic Day

New Delhi: History is set to be made this Republic Day as Simran Bala, a 26-year-old Assistant Commandant in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), prepares to lead an all-male CRPF contingent during the ceremonial parade.

Hailing from Nowshera village in Jammu and Kashmir, Simran Bala will become the first woman officer to command over 140 male personnel on India’s most significant national day — a milestone moment for women in uniform.

Who is Simran Bala?

Simran Bala comes from a region that has witnessed decades of conflict along the India–Pakistan border. Despite the challenges, she carved her own path and emerged as a symbol of determination and resilience.

She cleared the UPSC CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) examination in May 2023 on her first attempt, securing an impressive 82nd All India Rank among 151 selected candidates. Notably, she was the only woman candidate from Jammu and Kashmir to clear the exam that year — all while continuing her college education.

Her achievement also marked another first: Simran Bala became the first woman from Jammu and Kashmir to join the CRPF as an officer.

A historic Republic Day moment

On the upcoming 77th Republic Day, Simran will command the CRPF unit as it marches down the Kartavya Path, a moment that holds both pride and responsibility.

Speaking to NDTV, she described the experience as deeply emotional and humbling. Watching the parade unfold with India Gate standing tall and leading the force on such a significant day, she said, is an honour she will cherish for life.
