The Supreme Court of India has officially announced that it will observe the Eid-ul-Adha (Bakrid) holiday on May 28, 2026.

The decision follows the revised holiday notification issued by the Central Government regarding Eid celebrations.

To avoid confusion over the revised date, the Supreme Court Registry issued a formal circular clarifying the updated holiday schedule.

Supreme Court Issues Official Notification

According to the official order, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India directed that the Supreme Court and its Registry will remain closed on Thursday, May 28, 2026, instead of the previously scheduled holiday on May 27.

The court also confirmed that normal functioning will continue on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

The notification stated:

“As announced by the Government of India, the holiday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) will be on Thursday, May 28, 2026.”

The order further clarified that all cases earlier listed for May 28 will now be taken up on May 27.

Cases Scheduled for May 28 Shifted

The Supreme Court confirmed that matters originally scheduled for hearing on May 28, 2026, will be advanced and listed a day earlier.

As a result:

• The Supreme Court will function normally on May 27
• May 28 will be treated as a full court holiday
• Registry operations will remain closed on May 28

Lawyers, litigants and court staff have been advised to follow the revised listing schedule issued by the Registry.

Central Government Offices in Delhi Also Closed

The Ministry of Personnel has also announced that all central government administrative offices located in Delhi will remain closed on May 28, 2026, on account of Eid-ul-Adha.

Earlier, the Centre had declared May 27 as the holiday for Bakrid. However, the date was revised following updated moon-sighting observations.

The ministry stated:

“Central Government Administrative Offices located in Delhi will remain closed on May 28, 2026, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid).”

Why the Holiday Date Was Changed

Bakrid or Eid-ul-Adha is observed according to the Islamic lunar calendar, meaning the exact festival date depends on moon sightings.

Following revised moon-sighting updates in several regions, multiple states and institutions across India shifted the holiday from May 27 to May 28.

Several state governments, educational institutions and public offices have since issued revised notifications accordingly.
