Featuring Ali Fazal, Sonali Bendre, Aamir Bashir, and Rakesh Bedi, the series is set in late-1970s Delhi and follows a disturbing child abduction case that shakes an entire city.

With its haunting visuals and emotionally intense storytelling, Raakh aims to explore not only the investigation itself but also the devastating impact such crimes have on families and society.

As fear spreads across Delhi, desperate families search for answers while investigators race against time to uncover the truth.

At the center of the story is Sub-Inspector Jayprakash, portrayed by Ali Fazal. His pursuit of the perpetrators gradually exposes layers of violence, trauma, and human suffering.

Rather than functioning solely as a police procedural, the series appears to blend crime investigation with psychological and emotional storytelling.

The Real-Life Case Behind Raakh

According to the makers, Raakh draws inspiration from the infamous Geeta and Sanjay Chopra kidnapping and murder case, often referred to as the Ranga-Billa case.

What Happened in 1978?

On August 26, 1978, siblings Geeta Chopra (16) and Sanjay Chopra (14) left their home in Delhi to participate in a program at All India Radio.

The teenagers never reached their destination.

Investigators later determined that they had been abducted by two criminals, Kuljeet Singh (Ranga) and Jasbir Singh (Billa), who forced them into a stolen vehicle.

Witness accounts and investigation records indicated that the siblings fought courageously during the ordeal and attempted to attract public attention.

Despite alerts from citizens and reports provided to authorities, the response was reportedly slowed by procedural complications and jurisdictional challenges.

Nationwide Shock and Outrage

The kidnappers initially planned to demand ransom but reportedly abandoned the idea after learning more about the family’s background.

Fearing identification, the criminals murdered both children.

Their bodies were discovered near Delhi Ridge two days later, triggering widespread public outrage and one of the most significant criminal investigations of the era.

The case received extensive national attention and remains one of India’s most discussed criminal incidents decades later.

Arrest and Conviction

Investigators eventually traced the suspects using forensic evidence and witness testimonies.

A fingerprint recovered during the investigation reportedly became a key piece of evidence that helped authorities identify the accused.

The two men were arrested in September 1978, convicted by the courts, and later sentenced to death. Their executions were carried out in 1982.

Ali Fazal on Playing SI Jayprakash

Ali Fazal has described Raakh as far more than a conventional crime thriller.

According to the actor, the script stood out because of its emotional depth and layered storytelling.

Fazal noted that his character, SI Jayprakash, is an introverted and complex police officer navigating both personal and professional challenges while pursuing justice.

The actor believes the series offers a detailed character study alongside its investigative narrative.

Sonali Bendre on the Emotional Core of the Story

Sonali Bendre, who plays Mona Arora, said the emotional complexity of the project was a major reason she joined the cast.

The actress described Raakh as a deeply human story that uses the framework of a thriller to explore grief, resilience, and emotional vulnerability.

She also noted that the role allowed her to explore new dimensions as a performer.

Aamir Bashir on Portraying Loss and Grief

Aamir Bashir, who portrays Lt. Col. Ashok Arora, highlighted the emotional challenges of playing a disciplined man dealing with unimaginable loss.

The actor said the role required him to navigate intense emotional territory while remaining true to the character’s personality and background.

According to Bashir, Raakh combines crime investigation with powerful emotional storytelling, making it a unique viewing experience.
