Kimmel, visibly moved during his speech, recalled first meeting Carolla in 1994 when he was working on the Los Angeles radio show “Kevin and Bean.” At the time, Carolla—then working as a boxing instructor—was brought in to help train Kimmel for a boxing event after calling into KROQ radio.

Their first on-air interaction quickly set the tone for their dynamic relationship, with Kimmel recalling Carolla’s sharp comedic roast during his radio debut appearance.

From that point, the two began training together briefly for boxing sessions that Kimmel described as casual and often ending in laughter rather than serious preparation. Their early interactions marked the beginning of a long-running friendship and professional partnership.

Kimmel described the experience as formative, joking that while he ultimately lost the boxing match, he “gained a life partner,” a comment that drew laughter from the audience as he added, “If that sounds inappropriate to you, it was and it is.”
