‘Very Hungry For Work’: Mouni Roy Opens Up About Labels, Typecasting And Her 9-Year Shift From TV To Films

Actor Mouni Roy has spoken candidly about her journey from television to Bollywood, revealing that it took her nearly nine years to successfully transition into films. The actor, who recently attended the Cannes Film Festival 2026, said she remains deeply passionate about acting and continues to seek meaningful opportunities across films and OTT platforms.

During a recent conversation with Brut, Mouni admitted that despite achieving recognition across multiple formats, her ambition as an actor remains unchanged.

“I am very, very hungry for work,” she said.

Mouni Roy Reflects On Her Television Stardom

Mouni Roy first became a familiar face on Indian television through popular serials such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Devon Ke Dev… Mahadev and Naagin.

Over the years, she built a strong fanbase before gradually entering Bollywood with films including Gold, Made in China, Brahmāstra and The Bhootnii.

While discussing her journey, Mouni also opened up about constantly being labelled and typecast throughout different phases of her career.

‘People Always Put Me In A Box’

The actor said she has faced assumptions about what kind of roles she could or could not perform ever since her early television days.

“I have been typecast since the beginning of my career,” Mouni said.

Explaining further, she added:

“When I did Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, people said the girl next door can’t play a glam part. When I did reality and dance shows, they said I was too glamorous. When I did Sati, they said I was too Indian.”

She also recalled how her fantasy and mythology projects shaped public perception about her acting range.

“When I did Naagin, it became ‘she can only do fantasy fiction or mythological shows.’ That’s something I’ve always dealt with, and it doesn’t really bother me,” she said.

Mouni Says Hard Work Matters More Than Labels

According to Mouni, labels no longer influence how she views her work or career choices.

“It doesn’t matter whether you call me glamorous, stylish, or anything else,” she said.

The actor added that audiences often associate her with visually larger-than-life roles after projects like Brahmāstra and Bhootnii, but she focuses more on sincerity and effort than categorisation.

“As long as people can see that I’m putting in my hard work and giving 100%, and it resonates with the audience, that’s my biggest takeaway,” Mouni shared.

Upcoming Projects

On the professional front, Mouni Roy is currently appearing in Salakaar, which also stars Naveen Kasturia, Asrar Khan, Janhavi Hardas, Mukesh Rishi and Kuldeep Sareen.

She will next be seen in David Dhawan’s upcoming entertainer Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, alongside Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur.

With her steady presence across television, films and digital projects, Mouni continues to expand her space in the entertainment industry while embracing both commercial and experimental roles.
