Anne Hathaway has opened up about her third pregnancy, sharing how different the experience has been compared with her earlier pregnancies while promoting her upcoming film Verity.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor spoke about discovering she was pregnant shortly before the promotional campaign for The Devil Wears Prada 2 began. She also revealed that one of the most noticeable changes this time has been an unusually strong sense of smell.
Anne Hathaway Reveals When She Found Out She Was Pregnant
Hathaway explained that she learned about her pregnancy approximately two and a half weeks before the The Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour was scheduled to begin.
“I found out I was pregnant like two and a half weeks before The Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour kicked off. And I was just like, ‘How’s that going to work?’” she said during her conversation with Jimmy Fallon.
The timing meant that Hathaway had to navigate a major promotional schedule while experiencing a pregnancy that was already proving different from her previous ones.
Hathaway Says Her Third Pregnancy Has Been Different
The Verity actor compared her latest pregnancy with her first pregnancy, when fatigue was one of her main symptoms.
“I got really lucky. You know, my main symptom during my first pregnancy was fatigue, and that didn’t happen this time,” Hathaway said.
Instead, she said her third pregnancy brought acne and an unusually heightened sense of smell.
“This time my main symptom was… Well, acne, but I had the craziest sense of smell,” she added.
Hathaway joked about how powerful her sense of smell had become, saying that it felt as though she could smell far more than what was immediately around her.
“I went back to the 80s. There were many strikes there,” she quipped.
Anne Hathaway Describes Her ‘Goodfellas’ Sense of Smell
Hathaway also recalled how her heightened sense of smell affected her while travelling for promotional appearances.
She described moving through hotels and noticing the smells coming from different areas, including garbage bins, kitchens and room-service orders.
“It’s amazing; it’s like this Goodfellas experience. You’re going in and out of hotels in the backways, but you pass so many garbage bins, and you go through so many kitchens,” she explained.
The actor added that elevators could be particularly revealing because she could smell food being delivered to individual hotel rooms.
“And then you go into elevators, and you smell every single room service order,” Hathaway said.
Perfume Became Difficult for Hathaway During Pregnancy
The actor also explained that her heightened sense of smell sometimes made social interactions challenging.
Hathaway said people close to her would approach her to talk or congratulate her, but the smell of their perfume could become difficult for her to tolerate because of how sensitive her sense of smell had become.
Her comments offered a light-hearted glimpse into how pregnancy had affected her while she continued with a demanding year of film promotions.
