Mrunal Thakur Calls Body-Shaming Remark About Bipasha Basu Her ‘Mistake’: “I Didn’t Realise Until I Walked That Route”

Actor Mrunal Thakur has addressed a resurfaced video in which she made remarks about Bipasha Basu that were widely criticised as body-shaming. Calling it a “mistake,” the Lust Stories 2 actor said she has grown from the experience and now better understands the impact of her words.

In a recent interaction with Filmygyan, Mrunal reflected on the controversy and the lessons she has taken from it.

“If I Hadn’t Walked That Route, I Wouldn’t Have Understood”

Speaking about her earlier comments related to beauty standards, Mrunal admitted that she did not fully grasp the weight of her statements at the time.

“There’s something that I said about beauty standards. I didn’t realise until I walked that route. If I hadn’t, maybe I wouldn’t have understood. I might have thought I was right,” she said.

She added that personal growth often comes from confronting one’s own missteps. “It takes courage to accept that it was part of a journey. Everyone learns,” she noted.

The Resurfaced Clip And Backlash

The controversy reignited after an old interview clip featuring Mrunal and her Kumkum Bhagya co-star Arijit Taneja circulated online. In the video, Mrunal made comments comparing herself to Bipasha Basu, including a joke referencing physical appearance.

The clip drew criticism on social media, with several users calling out the tone of the remarks and describing them as body-shaming.

“19-Year-Old Me Said Many Silly Things”

Following the backlash, Mrunal issued a public apology, acknowledging her age and immaturity at the time.

“19-year-old me as a teenager said many silly things. I didn’t always understand the weight of my voice or how much words, even in jest, could hurt. But it did, and for that I am deeply sorry,” she wrote.

She clarified that her intention was not to shame anyone and described the moment as playful banter that crossed a line. “I truly wish I had chosen my words differently,” she added.

Her response has been viewed by many as an example of accountability, with the actor emphasising reflection and learning over defensiveness.

On the professional front, Mrunal Thakur is preparing for the release of Do Deewane Seher Mein. Directed by Ravi Udyawar and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film also stars Siddhant Chaturvedi.
