Shruti Haasan on Marriage: ‘I Came Close to Marriage’ and ‘I Really Like Companionship’

Shruti Haasan has once again spoken candidly about marriage, companionship and motherhood, explaining why she does not necessarily associate a committed relationship with the institution of marriage.

The actor and singer discussed her perspective during a conversation on Soha Ali Khan’s podcast. Shruti said she genuinely values companionship and the experience of building a life with someone, but remains unconvinced about the need for legal paperwork or an elaborate wedding to validate that bond.

Shruti Haasan Says She Really Likes Companionship

Shruti made it clear that her reservations about marriage do not mean she is against relationships or long-term companionship.

Instead, she said she has generally approached life without trying to fit herself into conventional categories. She also acknowledged that her views can be traditional in certain areas while being unconventional in others.

“I really like companionship. But, I have lived my whole life in a way of not fitting in a box. Weirdly, I am very traditional in some things and quite conservative in my approach to certain other things, but that’s only because no one forced me to come to that conclusion.”

Explaining her concerns about marriage, Shruti questioned the emphasis placed on legal documentation and lavish celebrations.

“I just feel that the paperwork with marriage, the lavish spending, showing, I feel like ‘Who are we doing this for?’”

For Shruti, the emotional commitment between two people matters more than the formal label attached to their relationship.

‘I Came Close to Marriage’

Shruti also revealed that she had previously reached a point where marriage was a serious possibility.

Interestingly, she said that getting close to marriage itself did not frighten her as much as she might have expected. Her bigger concern remains the idea that a relationship needs paperwork or a large public celebration to establish its legitimacy.

“I enjoy that my partner and I pick each other everyday, but not because of the paperwork. That’s my fear, otherwise, not really. I came close to marriage and it didn’t really scare me that much when push came to shove.”

She also questioned the amount of money that can be spent on weddings, suggesting that some of those resources could instead be directed toward charitable causes.

“No shaming the big spenders, but that always bothers me. Give it to charity!…”

Shruti Haasan Is Open to Adoption and Biological Motherhood

The actress also spoke openly about her desire to become a mother.

Shruti said she is open to adoption and would love to experience motherhood. At the same time, she expressed an interest in having a biological child as well.

“I am open to adopt. I would really love to just be a mum, but I would also like to try it as an extension of myself in some biological way.”

Her comments underline the distinction she makes between marriage and parenthood. For Shruti, becoming a mother does not necessarily have to be tied to following one particular relationship structure.

Shruti Previously Called Marriage ‘Scary’

This is not the first occasion on which Shruti has discussed her reservations about marriage.

During an earlier conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia, she described the idea of marriage as frightening because of what the formal institution could represent for her sense of individuality.

“I’m petrified of the idea of marriage, and I have no fear in saying that. I’ve worked so hard my whole life to be my own person that the idea of attaching it by a piece of paper feels really scary to me; that’s it.”

Shruti also stressed that her views on marriage should not be interpreted as a rejection of loyalty or commitment.

“I’m capable of doing that by myself. I don’t require a piece of paper.”

Her comments suggest that she sees commitment as something that can be maintained through the choices and actions of two people rather than through a legal document alone.

On the professional front, Shruti Haasan was last seen in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s 2025 action film Coolie, which starred Rajinikanth in the lead role alongside an ensemble cast. The film received mixed critical responses following its release.
