Chelsea Handler Recalls Teacher Who Told Her She Was “So Special” During Difficult Childhood

Chelsea Handler is reflecting on the elementary school teacher she says became an important source of encouragement during one of the most difficult periods of her childhood.

In a conversation with David Begnaud, Handler recalled her third-grade teacher, Mrs. Schectman, who would regularly pull her aside and tell her, “You’re so special.” According to Handler, the teacher also told her that she had a gift, even though she did not connect those words of encouragement to any particular achievement.

Handler was around 9 years old at the time and has previously described her home life during that period as being deeply affected by grief. Looking back, she said having an adult believe in her was particularly meaningful for a child experiencing that environment.

Handler remembered Mrs. Schectman as someone who made a deliberate effort to reassure her when she needed it.

The comedian said the teacher would take her aside at school and tell her she was special and had a gift. What stayed with Handler was that the praise did not appear to depend on something she had accomplished.

For Handler, that kind of unconditional encouragement mattered.

She explained that a child dealing with a difficult home environment needs someone who can tell them that they believe in them. In her recollection, Mrs. Schectman provided that reassurance at a crucial point in her childhood.

Mrs. Schectman Also Visited Handler’s Home

Handler said her teacher’s concern extended beyond the classroom.

Mrs. Schectman reportedly stopped by the Handler family home to get a sense of what was happening there. Handler now believes the teacher may have offered similar encouragement to other children, but rather than diminishing the memory, she sees it as evidence of what made Schectman such a caring educator.

Handler suggested that Mrs. Schectman’s ability to make students feel seen was part of what made her such a good teacher.

Chelsea Handler Reconnected With Her Teacher Years Later

The relationship did not end when Handler left elementary school.

Years later, Handler learned that Mrs. Schectman was living in Florida. She eventually brought her former teacher onto her Netflix show, giving the two an opportunity to reconnect publicly.

The pair remained in contact after that reunion and continued their relationship until Schectman’s death in 2024.

For Handler, the connection represented more than a reunion with a former teacher. She has credited Schectman with helping her navigate a difficult period and believes her teacher’s intervention helped keep her from going down the wrong path.
