Rejected by Indian Idol, Vishal Mishra Rose to Fame With Kabir Singh: His Journey to Chhathi Maiya

Before becoming one of Hindi cinema’s recognisable music composers and singers, Vishal Mishra faced repeated audition rejections, including one from Indian Idol. Years later, his music for Kabir Singh helped turn him into a household name, and he is now back in the spotlight with Chhathi Maiya from The Vvaan.

Vishal Mishra Recalls His Struggle With Rejections

Vishal Mishra’s journey in the Hindi music industry was not built overnight.

Speaking to Bombay Times, the composer and singer recalled facing rejection at several auditions before establishing himself in the industry. Among them was an unsuccessful attempt at Indian Idol.

“I’d been rejected nearly from all auditions. Now when I see people singing my songs in reality shows on television, it feels really great,” Vishal said.

For the composer, seeing aspiring singers perform his music carries a significance beyond professional recognition.

“The best thing that I have had in this industry is that people dream because of me — when they see my journey and this person from a small town has done hard work and come up in life,” he added.

From Indian Idol Rejection to Returning as a Guest

Vishal’s relationship with Indian Idol eventually came full circle.

After experiencing rejection during his early career, he later returned to the reality show as a special guest on Indian Idol 15.

The journey from auditioning for the platform to eventually appearing on it as an established composer and singer became another milestone in his career.

Vishal has also spoken about the messages he receives from listeners who say his journey has inspired them.

“People share my meme that went viral, and I get messages on a daily basis saying, ‘You have inspired me’,” he said.

He credited his journey to perseverance, faith and what he described as being in the right place at the right time.

“God has guided me, and I’ve been at the right places at the right time, and things have happened. It’s all been organic,” Vishal said.

Vishal Mishra’s Bollywood Breakthrough

Vishal made his debut as a composer in 2016 with the Tamil film Devi, which was also released in Hindi as Tutak Tutak Tutiya.

His profile grew further with Jaane De from the 2017 romantic comedy Qarib Qarib Singlle.

However, it was his work on Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Kabir Singh that brought him much wider recognition.

Vishal composed and sang “Kaise Hua”, one of the film’s most prominent songs. The romantic track became particularly popular with listeners and established Vishal as both a composer and playback singer to watch.

His work associated with Kabir Singh also brought major industry recognition, including Filmfare and IIFA honours, according to the source.

Vishal is now back in the spotlight with “Chhathi Maiya”, a song from the upcoming film The Vvaan.

The track features music composed by Vishal and arrives ahead of the film’s September 25 theatrical release.

The Vvaan stars Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead roles and marks their first film together.
