Priyanka Chopra’s father installed iron bars at their Bareilly home after boys stalked her, recalls her mother Madhu Chopra.

Before Priyanka Chopra Jonas became a global icon, Miss World 2000, and a Bollywood superstar, her teenage years in Bareilly were marked by challenges that shaped her early life.

In an interview with Lehren Retro, Priyanka’s mother, Madhu Chopra, shared details of how Priyanka, then just 13–17 years old, faced constant attention from boys in her hometown after returning from the US, where she had spent several formative years for her education.

Stalkers in Bareilly and Heightened Security

Madhu recalled that Priyanka’s westernized clothing and confident demeanor drew unwanted attention:

“We put her in a convent school and ensured she was picked up and dropped off in a car because her father was strict that she could not go anywhere alone. But boys started following our car, and it began to feel unsafe.”

The situation escalated when a boy jumped over the house’s boundary wall and entered their home. Alarmed, Priyanka’s father Ashok Chopra immediately installed iron bars throughout the house, from the boundary walls to the terrace, leaving no entry points—even monkeys couldn’t get in.

“One day, a boy jumped our fence and entered our house. That was scary. The next day, her father covered the entire house with iron bars. That house is still the same,” Madhu recalled.

Adjusting Priyanka’s Wardrobe

To ensure her daughter’s safety, Priyanka’s parents also asked her to tone down her wardrobe. Madhu shared:

“I don’t know what conversation they had. The next day, she came back from school wanting to go shopping. She picked dull and drab clothes… salwar kurtas in off-white, brown, and beige. After that, she stopped wearing western outfits in Bareilly.”

From Bareilly to Global Stardom

Despite the challenges, Priyanka’s talent and ambition were never hindered. After leaving Bareilly, she moved to Mumbai to participate in Miss India, a decision that marked the beginning of her extraordinary career. She won Miss India and Miss World 2000, eventually making her film debut in 2002 with the Tamil film Thamizhan. She later gained Bollywood fame with The Hero: Love Story of a Spy and Andaaz, starring alongside Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta.

From small-town security challenges to global red carpets, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and unwavering support from her family.
