Magudam Box Office Day 2: Vishal’s Directorial Debut Shows Modest Growth on Saturday

Vishal’s Magudam recorded a modest rise in its India box office collections on Saturday, taking its two-day gross to an estimated Rs 1.48 crore. The film now looks to Sunday to deliver a stronger jump and improve its opening weekend performance.

Vishal’s Magudam showed a small improvement at the Indian box office on Saturday, its second day in theatres. The film, which marks Vishal’s directorial debut, earned an estimated Rs 0.80 crore gross in India on Saturday, according to trade figures cited in the source material.

The Tamil film had opened with an estimated Rs 0.68 crore gross on Friday. Its second-day collection therefore represents a day-on-day increase of around 17.6 per cent.

With the addition of Saturday’s earnings, Magudam has reportedly collected approximately Rs 1.48 crore gross in India over its first two days. Its estimated domestic net collection stands at around Rs 1.30 crore.

Magudam box office collection after two days

The film’s Saturday performance brought a slight improvement in audience occupancy.

According to the reported trade estimates, Magudam recorded around 18.8 per cent occupancy on Saturday, compared with approximately 15 per cent on Friday.

Interestingly, the number of shows declined during the second day. The film had around 1,748 shows on Friday and 1,315 shows on Saturday, meaning the improved occupancy came despite a lower number of screenings.

Across its first two days, the film has reportedly played around 3,063 shows.

While Saturday’s growth is a positive movement, the overall numbers remain modest for a film led and directed by an established Tamil star. The crucial test will now be Sunday, when weekend audiences could provide the film with a more substantial increase.

Karnataka leads Magudam’s opening-day collection

Karnataka emerged as the strongest market for Magudam on its opening day.

The film reportedly earned around Rs 0.38 crore gross from Karnataka on Friday. Tamil Nadu followed with approximately Rs 0.20 crore.

Kerala contributed around Rs 0.07 crore, while the remaining Indian markets together accounted for roughly Rs 0.03 crore.

The state-wise figures indicate that Karnataka provided particularly strong support during the film’s first day, while the Tamil Nadu market delivered a comparatively lower opening than might have been expected for a Vishal-led release.

Magudam faces competition from Vishwanath & Sons

One factor affecting Magudam‘s theatrical run is its clash with Suriya’s family drama Vishwanath & Sons.

Both films arrived in theatres on Friday, giving Tamil audiences two prominent releases to choose from over the weekend.

With the opening weekend now underway, the performance of both films will depend heavily on audience response, show allocation and how well each title sustains occupancy through Sunday and the days that follow.

What is Magudam about?

Magudam revolves around a man whose peaceful existence is disrupted when circumstances force him to confront a violent legacy while attempting to protect his son from dangerous gangsters.

Vishal takes on multiple appearances in the film and plays the characters Linga and Kirubakaran.

The film reportedly went through a change in directorial leadership during production. Ravi Arasu, who initially helmed the project, exited following creative differences with Vishal. Vishal subsequently took over the direction of the remaining portions of the film, while Ravi Arasu is credited with the story.

The unusual transition behind the camera has added another layer of interest to the project, particularly because Magudam represents Vishal’s first feature as a director.

Magudam receives mixed response from critics

The film’s theatrical opening was accompanied by mixed to negative reviews.

Critics have raised questions about the film’s tonal balance and its attempt to combine a conventional mass-action narrative with elements associated with Vishal’s political ambitions.

Can Magudam improve its weekend box office?
