Saiyami Kher has spoken candidly about the pressure she experienced when she was starting out in the film industry, revealing that she was repeatedly encouraged to change her appearance and fit a particular image of what an actress was expected to look like.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, the actor recalled receiving advice from managers and others in the industry about her clothes, appearance and overall presentation. One suggestion that particularly stayed with her was that she should not keep her naturally curly hair.

Kher ultimately chose not to follow those instructions, saying she wanted to preserve her individuality rather than become what she described as a “factory-made Barbie.”

Saiyami Kher recalls pressure to conform

Speaking about an industry myth she wished she had understood earlier, Kher said she was frequently told that actresses needed to look and dress in a particular way to build a long-term career.

She recalled being advised to conform to a prescribed image rather than present herself as she naturally was.

Kher said she did not completely follow that path. Instead, she continued pursuing interests outside acting, including sports, and remained comfortable discussing subjects such as politics and sports publicly.

For the actor, maintaining that individuality eventually became more important than attempting to fit an industry-defined mould.

‘Don’t keep curly hair’: Saiyami Kher remembers the advice

Among the advice she received was a suggestion that she should change her hairstyle.

Kher recalled being told, “No, no, don’t keep curly hair.”

Rather than treating the comment as something she needed to act upon, she chose to retain her natural hair.

The actor said she believes that remaining authentic ultimately helped distinguish her from others. She argued that when performers allow themselves to be moulded entirely according to external expectations, they risk losing the qualities that make them distinctive.

Her comments also reflect a broader conversation in the entertainment industry about the pressure actors, particularly women, can face regarding their physical appearance and public image.

Saiyami Kher: ‘I didn’t want to become a factory-made Barbie’

Kher used a striking phrase to describe what she wanted to avoid.

She said she did not want to become a “factory-made Barbie,” explaining that she preferred to remain true to her personality and the values with which she was raised.

The actor also credited her parents for helping shape her approach to life. She said she was comfortable with the person she had become and was ultimately happy with the work that came her way without having to completely transform her identity.

Her career since then has included a mix of theatrical films and streaming projects, with several performances receiving critical attention.

Saiyami Kher’s journey from Rey to critically acclaimed roles

Kher began her acting career with the Telugu film Rey in 2015. She subsequently made her Hindi film debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya in 2016.

Although Mirzya did not make a major impact at the box office, Kher’s performance introduced her to Hindi-film audiences.

She later appeared in projects including Mauli, Choked, Unpaused and Special OPS.

Her work across film and streaming has allowed her to explore characters beyond the conventional leading-lady template.

Ghoomer became an important milestone

One of Kher’s most widely appreciated performances came with Ghoomer, the 2023 sports drama directed by R Balki.

In the film, she portrayed Anina Dixit, a young cricketer whose sporting ambitions are dramatically altered after a life-changing setback.

The role required Kher to portray both the physical and emotional challenges faced by an aspiring athlete dealing with circumstances beyond her control.

Her performance received considerable critical appreciation and reinforced the actor’s reputation for choosing character-driven material.

Saiyami Kher’s latest film premieres at IFFM 2026

Kher’s recent project Pal Bhar Ke Liye had its world premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne on August 16, 2026.

The film also stars Tahir Raj Bhasin and Vineet Kumar and marks Vikram Fadnavis’ directorial debut.

Kher plays a fashion photographer in the film. Speaking about the character, she has indicated that the role encouraged her to slow down and reflect on relationships and different aspects of life.

The film adds another character-oriented project to Kher’s growing body of work.

Saiyami Kher’s upcoming film Haiwaan

Kher also has Haiwaan lined up for release.

Directed by Priyadarshan, the film features Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan in leading roles alongside Kher.

Haiwaan is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on September 11, 2026.

With the project bringing together a prominent cast and an established filmmaker, it represents another significant addition to Kher’s upcoming slate.

Why Saiyami Kher’s comments matter

Kher’s experience highlights how career advice in the entertainment industry can sometimes extend beyond acting ability into an actor’s appearance, clothing, hairstyle and perceived public image.

Her decision to retain her curly hair and resist pressure to conform has become part of a broader professional philosophy: individuality can be an asset rather than an obstacle.

After more than a decade of work across films and streaming projects, Kher’s career demonstrates that there is no single appearance or personality required to build a sustainable presence in Indian cinema.

For the actor, staying recognisably herself appears to have been more valuable than following a formula.
