The death of Hayden Panettiere has brought renewed attention to a chapter of the actress’s career that had largely remained in the background: her long-running relationship with skincare company Neutrogena and her claims that the partnership ended after she publicly discussed postpartum depression.

Neutrogena has now addressed the backlash.

In a statement shared on Instagram Thursday, the brand said it was “deeply saddened” by Panettiere’s death and acknowledged that its past actions had left the actress feeling unsupported during a difficult period in her life.

“For more than a decade, Hayden was a valued member of our Neutrogena community,” the company said. “We are proud to have partnered with her and understand that we made her feel unsupported during a very difficult time. This is not what Neutrogena stands for or who we want to be.”

The statement represents the brand’s first public response to the renewed discussion surrounding Panettiere’s past allegations following her death.

Why Neutrogena is facing renewed scrutiny

Panettiere worked with Neutrogena from 2005 to 2015, making the relationship one of the longest-running commercial partnerships of her career.

Following her death at 36, comments from Panettiere about that partnership resurfaced online.

In her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” Panettiere described what she believed happened after she spoke publicly about her experience with postpartum depression.

The subject gained particular attention because Panettiere had not initially planned to discuss postpartum depression during a 2015 television interview. She later said that the topic arose unexpectedly and that she responded honestly about what she had experienced.

According to Panettiere’s account, she subsequently learned that Neutrogena wanted to end their relationship.

Her recollection of the events has now become a major part of the online conversation surrounding the brand.

It is important, however, to distinguish Panettiere’s account from an independently established finding about why the partnership ended. The actress described her understanding of what happened, while Neutrogena’s latest statement does not explicitly confirm every detail of her account.

What Panettiere said about postpartum depression

Panettiere spoke publicly about postpartum depression at a time when conversations around maternal mental health were receiving increasing attention.

During a May appearance on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast, she explained that she had not intended to make postpartum depression the subject of the interview.

“I had no intention of, or plan to, talk about postpartum depression. It just came up, and I was just being honest,” Panettiere said.

She described the disclosure as simply telling her own story rather than making a deliberate attempt to generate publicity.

“It was my truth,” she said.

The actress also explained that she never expected the discussion to have consequences for her professional relationship with Neutrogena.

According to her account, she was surprised to learn that the company wanted to end its association with her.

Panettiere said the partnership had lasted about a decade

The length of the relationship made the alleged fallout particularly painful for Panettiere.

She had worked with Neutrogena for roughly 10 years, beginning in 2005.

Panettiere said she believed the partnership would continue and described the possibility of losing it as something she had not anticipated.

She recalled being told by her representative that the situation could raise legal concerns.

Panettiere also said she understood that the partnership was unlikely to continue after that point.

The actress’s comments resurfaced after her death, prompting users on social media to direct criticism toward Neutrogena.

Some users called for a boycott of the brand, while others questioned how companies should respond when public figures associated with them discuss personal health experiences.

Neutrogena says Panettiere’s courage helped inspire conversations

In its response, Neutrogena did not ignore Panettiere’s history of speaking about difficult subjects.

Instead, the company specifically highlighted her willingness to discuss her challenges.

“Hayden’s courage in sharing her challenges helped inspire important conversations and awareness,” Neutrogena said.

The company also announced that it intends to make a significant investment in a longstanding community health partner.

According to the statement, the initiative is intended to help more women access support, including care related to postpartum depression.

Neutrogena said it would provide more information about the initiative once plans are finalized.

That proposed investment gives the brand a way to connect its response to one of the central issues raised by Panettiere during her lifetime: the need for greater awareness and support surrounding maternal mental health.

The company says it initially remained silent out of respect for her family

Neutrogena also explained why it did not immediately issue a public statement following Panettiere’s death.

The brand said it initially chose not to comment publicly out of respect for the actress’s family.

That silence became part of the online discussion as social-media users revisited Panettiere’s past statements.

The company has now broken that silence while simultaneously expressing condolences and acknowledging the criticism surrounding its former relationship with the actress.

The wording of the statement is significant because Neutrogena did not simply dispute the allegations or dismiss the online criticism.

Instead, it acknowledged that Panettiere felt unsupported and said that such an outcome was inconsistent with the kind of company it wants to be.

Panettiere’s openness about mental health became part of her legacy

The Neutrogena controversy cannot be separated completely from Panettiere’s broader willingness to speak openly about mental health.

In the later years of her life, the actress discussed addiction, recovery, postpartum depression and trauma in interviews and in her memoir.

Those conversations changed the way some fans understood her public image.

Panettiere had become famous as a child performer and later established herself as an adult actress through projects including “Heroes,” “Nashville,” “Remember the Titans,” “Ice Princess” and the “Scream” franchise.

For much of her career, audiences knew her primarily through those roles.

Her later interviews offered a more personal perspective.

Rather than presenting herself as someone who had overcome every difficulty, Panettiere often described recovery as an ongoing process.

That honesty resonated with people who had experienced similar challenges.

Her decision to speak publicly carried professional consequences, according to her account

The Neutrogena story also raises a broader question about celebrity endorsements and personal authenticity.

Brand partnerships frequently depend on an carefully managed public image. Celebrities are selected not only for their fame but also for how their personalities and public reputations align with a company’s identity.

Panettiere’s story, as she described it, presented a difficult collision between those expectations and her decision to discuss a deeply personal health experience.

Postpartum depression is a medical condition that can affect women following childbirth, and public conversations about it can help reduce stigma and encourage people to seek professional support.

Panettiere became one of the recognizable entertainment figures willing to discuss her own experience.

Her account suggests that she believed that honesty should not have jeopardized a professional relationship that had existed for years.

Neutrogena’s current response suggests the company recognizes that Panettiere experienced the situation differently.

Her memoir gave the claims a new audience

Panettiere’s memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” gave her an opportunity to tell her story in greater detail.

Memoirs are inherently personal accounts. They provide readers with the author’s perspective, memories and interpretation of events, but they do not necessarily establish every disputed fact independently.

That distinction matters when discussing the Neutrogena controversy.

Panettiere clearly believed that her public comments about postpartum depression played a role in the loss of the partnership. Neutrogena has now acknowledged that she felt unsupported, but its statement does not amount to a detailed confirmation of every allegation surrounding the partnership.

A responsible account therefore needs to present both elements without overstating what has been established.

Her death has intensified conversations about her life

Panettiere died on August 16 at age 36 after she was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.

The circumstances of her death remain under investigation, and authorities have not publicly established a final cause and manner of death in the information provided here.

Her death has consequently triggered renewed interest in many parts of her life, including her career, family, advocacy work and struggles with addiction and mental health.

That attention has also brought older interviews back into circulation.

For fans, the Neutrogena controversy is therefore not an isolated story. It is part of a larger reassessment of a performer who spent much of her life growing up in public.

A larger conversation about postpartum depression

Perhaps the most important issue emerging from the controversy is not the commercial dispute itself but the continuing need to discuss postpartum depression responsibly.

The condition can affect new mothers emotionally and psychologically and may require professional treatment and support.

Panettiere’s willingness to speak publicly about her experience helped make the subject more visible to an audience that might otherwise have encountered it only through medical or advocacy organizations.

Her story also demonstrated the complicated reality of public disclosure.

Being open about a health issue can help others feel less alone, but it can also expose a person to judgment, scrutiny and professional consequences.

That tension remains relevant well beyond Hollywood.

Neutrogena’s planned investment may become part of the story

The most concrete action announced by Neutrogena in its latest statement is its plan to invest in a longstanding community health partner working to expand access to support, including postpartum depression care.

The company has not yet provided all the details of that initiative.

Until those details are announced, it is difficult to assess its potential scope or impact.

Still, the commitment places postpartum mental-health support at the center of Neutrogena’s response.

For a company whose former ambassador publicly discussed the subject, that could become an important part of how the brand addresses the controversy in the months ahead.

Hayden Panettiere’s story remains bigger than one brand partnership

Panettiere’s relationship with Neutrogena was an important chapter in her professional life, but it represents only one part of a much larger career.

She spent decades working in television and film, beginning as a child and eventually becoming a leading figure for a generation of viewers.

Her performances in “Heroes” and “Nashville” remain among her best-known work, while “Ice Princess,” “Remember the Titans” and the “Scream” films helped broaden her connection with audiences.

Away from acting, she increasingly used her platform to discuss issues that affected her personally.

That willingness to speak openly is likely to remain central to how she is remembered.

The renewed Neutrogena controversy has brought difficult questions back into the spotlight, but it has also highlighted something Panettiere repeatedly emphasized during her later years: the value of telling the truth about experiences that can be difficult to discuss.

Neutrogena has now acknowledged that Panettiere felt unsupported and says it wants to use the moment to help expand access to postpartum mental-health support.

Whether that commitment develops into a meaningful long-term initiative remains to be seen.

For now, the most responsible way to view the controversy is through the documented statements on both sides: Panettiere’s account of her experience, and Neutrogena’s acknowledgment of how she felt and its stated intention to support women facing postpartum depression.
