Nimrat Kaur looked back at her school-day Independence Day celebrations, remembering tricolour flags, morning assemblies, patriotic songs and, of course, plates filled with samosas, jalebis and laddoos. The actress recently shared a nostalgic glimpse of how the national holiday felt to her as a child and how those simple celebrations gradually gave her a deeper understanding of India’s freedom struggle.

Taking to Instagram, Nimrat shared a video reflecting on the different ways Independence Day was celebrated at the schools she attended while growing up. She recalled that although each school had its own traditions, there was one thing she could always count on: special treats.

Nimrat revealed that she attended several schools and therefore experienced different versions of Independence Day celebrations.

“Every school had its own way of celebrating Independence Day, and I think I got to see six or seven different types of celebrations of Independence Day,” she shared.

However, she said there was one common element across those celebrations.

“And one common factor was that, in whichever school I used to go to, there were samosas and Independence Day cake,” Nimrat wrote in her Instagram caption.

For the actress, the food was an especially memorable part of the day. She recalled receiving packages containing a variety of snacks and sweets.

“We used to get a package. We used to get samosas, jalebis, laddoos, sandwiches. So, as a child, I used to just look forward to that,” she said.

While those treats remain a fond childhood memory, Nimrat also remembered the lessons her teachers shared about the significance of Independence Day.

From School Celebrations To Understanding India’s Freedom Struggle

Nimrat said that as a child, she initially did not fully understand what Independence Day represented or what India had gained its freedom from.

She credited her teachers with helping her understand the history behind the celebration, including the freedom movement and the sacrifices made by people before independence.

“Because, as a child, I had no idea what Independence Day actually meant. What did we get independence from? So, that lesson was actually very lovely to learn—the sacrifices that everyone made at that time, the kind of life people lived in India before independence, what the freedom movement was, everything about that time,” she recalled.

As she grew older, she came to understand that the period surrounding India’s independence also carried the painful history of Partition.

Nimrat acknowledged that the complexities of that era become clearer with age, while childhood memories often remain focused on the simpler and happier aspects of a celebration.

Nimrat Kaur Remembers Carrying The Tricolour

Among her strongest memories are those of carrying small Indian flags during school celebrations and participating in activities inspired by the tricolour.

She recalled how students sometimes made colourful objects as part of school activities and proudly carried them during Independence Day programmes.

Another memory that has stayed with her is gathering with fellow students in the assembly ground to sing the National Anthem.

“We all used to sing the National Anthem. And it’s such a core memory for me. You know, the way we used to look up at the flag when it unfurls and the flowers fall from it. Oh my God! That moment was so special and so iconic,” Nimrat said.

For her, these seemingly simple childhood rituals have remained emotionally powerful even years later.

‘I Feel So Proud As An Indian’

Looking back, Nimrat said her Independence Day memories take her back to a deeply emotional place and reinforce her connection with India.

“These are memories that hold on to, and it takes me back to such a beautiful place in my mind and my heart. And I feel so proud as an Indian. I feel so attached to my country, my soil, and there is nothing more dear to me than being an Indian and having the identity of India,” she said.

Ending her message on a lighter note, Nimrat joked that her childhood love for Independence Day treats has not disappeared.

“And I’m going to get myself some samosas. Till then, take care,” she added.

Nimrat Kaur’s Independence Day Message

Alongside her video, Nimrat shared a heartfelt caption celebrating her enduring affection for the country and the national holiday.

“Some things don’t change, they only grow with time – my love for our motherland and this beloved day…Happy Independence Day to my fellow citizens…long live our country, long live our spirit. Jai Hind.”

Her recollection highlights how Independence Day can hold different meanings at different stages of life. For a child, it may begin with flags, school assemblies, sweets and patriotic songs. With age, those same memories can become a gateway to understanding the history, sacrifice and complex emotions behind August 15.

For Nimrat, the childhood joy remains intertwined with a lasting sense of pride and belonging.
