David Harbour has won his first Emmy Award for his performance in HBO’s dark comedy DTF St. Louis, turning a four-nomination career at the Television Academy into a first victory.

The actor took home the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie award during the second night of the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Harbour faced a particularly competitive field that included his DTF St. Louis co-stars Jason Bateman and Richard Jenkins, along with Half Man star Richard Gadd. His victory also added another major honor to a series that has emerged as one of the strongest limited-series contenders of the Emmy season.

“I’m really moved, I cannot believe you have embraced our show so much,” he said from the stage, before turning his attention to his fellow nominees.

“In terms of my fellow nominees, it was not a fair fight,” Harbour joked.

He then delivered one of the night’s more unexpected punchlines, thanking HBO for “all your tons of notes.”

The remark drew laughter from the room while also reflecting the collaborative process behind the series.

Speaking to reporters backstage, Harbour described the experience of winning as something that initially felt almost unreal.

“It always feels somewhat unreal, you feel a little bit out of your body,” he said, explaining that the result was especially meaningful because he had been competing against friends and longtime colleagues.

“I was up against some very good friends like Jason Bateman and Richard Jenkins. It was bittersweet,” he added.

A first Emmy after four nominations

Harbour’s Emmy win arrives after several years of recognition from the Television Academy.

He had previously received three Emmy nominations, including two for his acclaimed portrayal of Jim Hopper in Stranger Things.

His latest nomination marked a different chapter in his career, rewarding his work on a series that he helped develop with creator Steven Conrad.

For Harbour, DTF St. Louis was not simply another acting job. He and Conrad had been developing the project for several years before it reached HBO.

The actor has also served as an executive producer through his production company, Bravo Axolotl, giving him a creative role behind the camera as well as in front of it.

Why DTF St. Louis became an Emmy contender

Created, written and directed by Steven Conrad, DTF St. Louis follows three adults caught in a complicated love triangle against a backdrop of middle-age dissatisfaction.

The seemingly ordinary relationship drama takes a much darker turn when the triangle ultimately results in a death.

Harbour plays Rick, while Jason Bateman and Linda Cardellini portray other central figures in the story. The show’s combination of uncomfortable comedy, relationship drama and mystery helped distinguish it within this year’s limited-series field.

The series entered the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards with 13 nominations, including acting recognition for Harbour, Bateman, Jenkins, Cardellini and Joy Sunday.

Harbour reflects on life after Stranger Things

Harbour’s Emmy victory also represents an important milestone in a career that changed dramatically following the success of Stranger Things.

Before becoming internationally known as Hopper, Harbour had already spent around two decades working professionally as an actor.

He explained that the success of Stranger Things moved him into an entirely different level of visibility, but it did not change his understanding of the profession.

“I’ve been acting professionally for 20 years before Stranger Things, so I sort of knew what life was as a working actor,” he said backstage.

The success of the Netflix series, he acknowledged, “catapulted” him into a different world.

Rather than relying solely on that success, Harbour said he wanted to continue seeking challenging material and collaborators he respected.

That philosophy ultimately helped lead him to DTF St. Louis.

A project built before the spotlight arrived

Harbour said he and Conrad developed DTF St. Louis roughly four years before the series reached audiences.

That long development period gave him an opportunity to think carefully about the kind of projects he wanted to pursue.

He said he was interested in working with people he admired and finding material that would push him creatively.

That approach is reflected in the ensemble surrounding DTF St. Louis, which brought together established performers and emerging talent for a story that deliberately mixes comedy with darker themes.

DTF St. Louis continues its Emmy run

Harbour’s acting win is not necessarily the end of the show’s Emmy campaign.

Because he also served as an executive producer, he remains in contention for another potential Emmy if DTF St. Louis wins Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series during the main Primetime Emmy ceremony.

The series has already collected several awards during this year’s Creative Arts Emmys, including recognition for writing, directing, cinematography and picture editing.

Its strong showing has cemented DTF St. Louis as one of the season’s notable television successes.

For Harbour, however, the biggest achievement is more personal: after years of nominations and an already celebrated career, he finally has an Emmy of his own.

Harbour’s first Emmy win adds another defining moment to a career that has already included the global success of Stranger Things. With DTF St. Louis, he has demonstrated that his post-Stranger Things chapter can be just as creatively ambitious—and now, Emmy-winning.
