Could Joey King and Maisie Williams Lead a Practical Magic 3? Producer Denise Di Novi Weighs In

The Owens family may not be finished with its magical adventures just yet.

As Practical Magic 2 prepares to reach theatres, producer Denise Di Novi has opened up about the possibility of seeing Joey King and Maisie Williams continue the story in future films.

King and Williams play Kylie and Antonia Owens, the grown daughters of Sandra Bullock’s Sally Owens. Speaking with PEOPLE during the film’s recent press event in Beverly Hills, Di Novi made it clear that she would welcome another chapter centred on the younger generation.

The producer, who also worked on the original 1998 Practical Magic, believes the two actresses have developed a chemistry that could support the franchise beyond the latest film.

Denise Di Novi Wants More of Kylie and Antonia

Di Novi expressed hope that the characters played by King and Williams could eventually take the Owens family story forward.

“I hope Antonia and Kylie carry on the Owens story,” she said, praising the pairing of the two actresses.

The producer also highlighted their off-screen friendship and their connection within the film.

According to Di Novi, King and Williams share a chemistry comparable to that of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, whose relationship as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens formed the emotional centre of the original movie.

For the producer, that chemistry creates an obvious opportunity for more stories.

The Next Generation Could Take Centre Stage

The idea of shifting the focus toward Kylie and Antonia would represent a natural progression for the franchise.

The original Practical Magic introduced audiences to the Owens sisters and their family’s complicated relationship with magic. The sequel brings the story forward by placing the next generation much closer to the centre of the conflict.

Di Novi suggested that a future film could explore what happens to Kylie and Antonia as they grow older and establish identities of their own.

She is particularly interested in seeing how the characters develop as they enter a more mature stage of adulthood.

That could give a potential third film an opportunity to explore the Owens legacy from a new perspective while retaining the supernatural elements that define the franchise.

Sandra Bullock Is Also Open to Passing the Torch

Di Novi’s comments echo a recent statement from Sandra Bullock, who has also expressed enthusiasm for another sequel if the new movie performs well.

Bullock previously suggested that a third installment could potentially pass the franchise’s “torch” to the younger women.

That would make Kylie and Antonia logical candidates to lead a future chapter.

For fans of the original film, such a direction could also preserve the connection to Sally and Gillian while allowing the story to evolve instead of simply repeating the original sisters’ journey.

Practical Magic 2 Brings Back Bullock and Kidman

Before the franchise can move forward, however, Practical Magic 2 has to establish its own story.

The sequel reunites Bullock and Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens.

The characters once again face a supernatural threat, with a dark curse putting the Owens family in danger and drawing the younger generation into the conflict.

The sequel therefore combines the established relationship between Sally and Gillian with a greater emphasis on their daughters.

For Di Novi, bringing Bullock and Kidman back after more than two decades also offered an opportunity to portray their characters differently.

The producer noted that both actresses have experienced considerably more of life since the first movie, allowing Sally and Gillian to return as older women without losing the vitality and confidence that defined them previously.

The new film explores questions surrounding adulthood, motherhood, relationships and changing identities.

Sally, in particular, faces the experience of watching her children grow up and leave home, while the film also considers whether romance and personal fulfilment continue to have a place later in life.

These themes give the supernatural story a more mature emotional backdrop.

The Sequel Had to Live Up to the Original

Returning to a beloved film more than 20 years after its original release comes with obvious expectations.

Di Novi acknowledged that the creative team felt pressure to make the sequel worthy of the first movie.

She believes the new film succeeds by expanding the emotional and magical elements without abandoning what made the original special.

The producer described the sequel as deeper, funnier, more romantic and more meaningful while remaining respectful of its predecessor.

Susanne Bier Directs the New Chapter

Practical Magic 2 is directed by Susanne Bier, with the screenplay developed by original writer Akiva Goldsman and Georgia Pritchett, known for her work on Succession.

The combination brings new creative voices into the franchise while retaining connections to the original movie.

The sequel’s story also allows the filmmakers to expand the mythology of the Owens family and introduce audiences to a younger generation of characters.

Could There Be a Third Film?

At this stage, there is no confirmed Practical Magic 3.
