Sheena Chohan on Playing a Fearless IPS Officer in Jatasya Maranam Dhruvam: ‘I Wanted Audiences to See the Woman Behind the Uniform’

Actress Sheena Chohan is stepping into a distinctly different space with Jatasya Maranam Dhruvam. In the upcoming film directed by Shravan, she plays Anusha, an IPS officer whose professional discipline, moral conviction and physical courage form a crucial part of her character.

The role has also allowed Sheena to bring a skill she has developed over several years to the screen. A trained martial artist and karate practitioner with a brown belt, the actor has performed action sequences while preparing to portray a police officer with more depth than simply an imposing screen presence.

The actor said she returned to her martial arts and fitness training as part of her preparation. The experience gave her the confidence to participate extensively in the film’s choreographed action.

Some of the sequences involved fights, guns, running and pursuing characters, presenting a demanding physical challenge.

For Sheena, however, the opportunity was also rewarding because it allowed her to incorporate a skill she had spent years developing into her acting.

She worked closely with the film’s action team, with the sequences being choreographed with safety considerations in place. Her intention was to ensure that Anusha’s movements reflected the discipline of an officer rather than looking like action performed simply for spectacle.

Sheena Chohan researched real police officers for authenticity

To understand the profession more realistically, the actor spent time with a real police officer from Versova. She observed her work and spoke with her about the realities of the profession, her experiences and the reasons behind choosing a career in law enforcement.

The interaction changed Sheena’s understanding of what makes a convincing police character.

According to the actor, authenticity does not necessarily come from appearing intimidating. Instead, it can be found in everyday details such as discipline, behaviour, responsibility and the way an officer responds to difficult situations.

This research became particularly important when Sheena had to balance Anusha’s authority with her human side.

Anusha is not a stereotypical ‘tough cop’

One of the aspects Sheena finds most interesting about Anusha is the character’s internal conflict.

Rather than presenting her as an invulnerable police officer who is always in control, the film allows Anusha to have moments of vulnerability. She is also dealing with the challenges of working within a system while confronting patriarchal attitudes.

For Sheena, that contradiction makes the character more relatable.

Anusha has the authority expected from an IPS officer, but she also has emotions, doubts and personal challenges. Sheena believes those layers distinguish the character from the stereotypical action cop frequently seen in films.

Her objective was therefore not merely to make Anusha look powerful. She wanted the character’s decisions and actions to communicate her values.

Sharing screen space with JD Chakravarthy

Another significant part of Sheena’s experience on Jatasya Maranam Dhruvam was working with veteran actor JD Chakravarthy.

Sheena described the experience as particularly valuable, highlighting his experience and instinct as an actor. She also recalled the conversations they had about cinema while working together.

According to Sheena, Chakravarthy’s appreciation of her preparation and commitment to understanding Anusha was especially meaningful.
