Festive dressing does not always require a heavily embellished outfit. Sometimes, all it takes is a pair of statement earrings to instantly elevate a look.
From Alia Bhatt’s sculptural chandbalis to Ananya Panday’s turquoise shoulder-dusting earrings, oversized earrings are having a major fashion moment. But while dramatic earrings can transform a festive outfit, wearing them for hours can also leave your earlobes feeling sore.
The trick is to get both the styling and the support right.
Celebrity fashion stylist Shraddha Lakhani shares her tips for making statement earrings work with your outfit, while jewellery designer and researcher Keya Agarwal Badhalia, founder of KEYA by Adbhut, explains how to make heavier designs more comfortable.

Keep the Neckline Relatively Bare
Large jhumkas, chandbalis and danglers already draw attention towards the face. Pairing them with a busy neckline can make the overall look feel crowded.
Lakhani recommends silhouettes such as strapless, off-shoulder, halter and deep-back designs. High necklines and chokers, she notes, can compete visually with oversized earrings.
A simpler neckline gives the earrings room to become the main accessory.
Keep the Hair Sleek
Your hairstyle can make or break a statement-earring look.
Try pulling your hair into a sleek bun or side braid, or wear waves swept towards one shoulder. The idea is to keep the ear visible rather than allowing layers of hair to cover the jewellery.

Choose an Earring Shape That Suits the Look
Not all statement earrings create the same visual effect.
- Jhumkas: Add volume and a traditional festive feel without extending too far sideways.
- Chandbalis: Offer a structured, rounded silhouette that can create a more elongated appearance.
- Kadas and danglers: Introduce movement and can be particularly striking in photographs and videos.
Choose the shape according to both your outfit and the effect you want to create.

When the earrings are doing the talking, the rest of your jewellery does not need to compete.
Lakhani recommends keeping other pieces relatively understated. If you want to add something around the face, a delicate maang tikka or bindi can connect the overall look without making it feel overloaded.
How to Make Heavy Earrings More Comfortable
Looking glamorous is one thing; keeping your earrings comfortable for an entire celebration is another.
Badhalia shares several practical tricks that can help provide additional support when wearing statement earrings.
Try a Kanoti
A kanoti can act as a support mechanism for heavier earrings. It hooks onto the earring and connects to the hair, helping lift the jewellery and reduce some of the pressure on the earlobe.
Rather than treating it as something purely functional, it can also be incorporated into the overall jewellery styling.
Use an Ear-Lift or Earring Support Patch
Adhesive earring-support patches can sit behind the earlobe and provide additional support to the earring.
Products sold under names such as Slickfix, Earlift and Sanas are designed for this purpose. They can be particularly useful when statement earrings need to be worn for several hours and may also help reduce drooping.
Always follow the product’s instructions and avoid using an adhesive product if your skin is irritated or sensitive to it.
Keep an Emergency Bandage Hack Handy
If you find yourself without a dedicated earring support, a small piece of adhesive bandage placed behind the earlobe can provide additional support for the earring backing.
The idea is to give the clasp more grip and distribute some of the pull. However, remove it if the skin becomes irritated or uncomfortable.
Choose Lightweight Statement Designs
A large-looking earring does not necessarily have to be heavy.
When shopping for statement jewellery, look for pieces designed with hollow construction, lighter materials or considered weight distribution. These can create the visual impact of oversized earrings without placing as much strain on the earlobe.
This is especially useful if you know you will be wearing the earrings throughout a long wedding ceremony, festive dinner or party.
Upgrade the Earring Backings
The backing can make a significant difference when wearing heavier earrings.
Instead of a tiny standard backing, look for larger, wider or flatter backs specifically designed for statement earrings. Their broader surface can help distribute some of the weight across the earlobe rather than concentrating the pressure around the piercing.
Give Your Earlobes Some Aftercare
Once the earrings come off, give your ears a little attention.
Badhalia recommends gently massaging the earlobes with a small amount of coconut or almond oil to soothe the area and keep the skin moisturised.
If your earlobes are painful, swollen, bleeding or showing signs of irritation after wearing heavy earrings, give them time to recover rather than immediately putting the jewellery back on.
The Easiest Formula for Wearing Statement Earrings
The secret to pulling off oversized earrings is balance.
Keep the neckline relatively clean, choose a hairstyle that exposes the ears and make the earrings the primary jewellery statement. When comfort is a concern, lightweight construction, supportive backings and earring-support accessories can make a noticeable difference.
