Neagley Season 1 review: Prime Video’s latest Reacher spin-off puts Frances Neagley at the centre of her own action story, and Maria Sten gives the character enough personality and emotional depth to make the transition work.

Neagley began streaming on Prime Video on September 16 and stars Maria Sten, Greyston Holt, Adeline Rudolph, Jasper Jones and Damon Herriman. Directed by Sam Hill, Gary Fleder, Phil Abraham and MJ Bassett, the series expands the world established by Reacher while deliberately giving its lead a different identity.

That distinction matters. The easiest way to make a spin-off would have been to turn Neagley into a slightly modified version of Jack Reacher. Instead, the series takes a more restrained route and builds its action around her own personality, investigative instincts and history.

The result isn’t a revolutionary thriller, and its mystery has some predictable turns. But there is enough momentum, character work and physical action to make the eight-episode-style crime thriller an entertaining addition to the franchise.

What is Neagley Season 1 about?

The story follows Frances Neagley (Maria Sten), who is working as a private investigator in Chicago.

Her life changes after she learns that her childhood friend Tommy Crane has died after running naked towards a moving train. Neagley refuses to accept the initial explanation surrounding his death and begins investigating what happened.

Her suspicions eventually point towards Echo Canyon, an organisation that presents itself as a place where vulnerable people can rebuild their lives. Neagley gradually discovers that there is considerably more going on behind the organisation’s public image.

Her investigation brings several unexpected people into her orbit, including Detective Hudson Riley (Greyston Holt), agency assistant Renee (Adeline Rudolph) and street hustler Keno (Jasper Jones).

The investigation eventually takes Neagley towards businessman Pierce Woodrow and Echo Canyon operator Lawrence Cole (Damon Herriman).

Jack Reacher also appears briefly, but the cameo does not dominate the series. That is ultimately appropriate because Neagley works best when it concentrates on its own protagonist.

Neagley isn’t simply a female version of Reacher

One of the smartest decisions in the series is that it doesn’t attempt to recreate the formula of Reacher with a different actor.

Neagley has her own physical style and temperament. Her approach to confrontations is based less on overwhelming force and more on preparation, accuracy and knowing how to exploit an opponent’s weaknesses.

The action consequently feels different from the main series.

Her fights can be brutal and uncomfortable rather than spectacularly choreographed displays of strength. That fits the character because Neagley isn’t supposed to be a carbon copy of Reacher.

This also allows Maria Sten to give the character a more distinctive screen presence.

Maria Sten is the biggest reason the series works

Sten carries much of the show.

Her performance becomes particularly effective when the story explores Neagley’s discomfort with physical contact. Instead of treating the character trait as a superficial quirk, the series connects it with experiences from her past.

The writing gives Sten enough space to communicate Neagley’s discomfort without repeatedly spelling out what the audience is supposed to feel.

That restraint benefits the character.

Sten is equally convincing during the action sequences. Neagley’s physical ability feels like an extension of an established character rather than a sudden transformation into an invincible action hero.

It is this balance between vulnerability and capability that gives Neagley more dimension than the average television action protagonist.

The supporting cast adds plenty of energy

Greyston Holt brings a dependable presence to Hudson Riley, who becomes an important part of Neagley’s investigation.

Adeline Rudolph’s Renee has potential, although the character doesn’t receive quite as much development as some of the other supporting players.

Damon Herriman, meanwhile, appears to have considerable fun as Lawrence Cole, giving the antagonist an unpredictable quality.

But Jasper Jones’ Keno arguably makes the strongest impression among the supporting cast. His character brings a different energy to the investigation and prevents the series from becoming too serious or mechanically procedural.

The changing group around Neagley also helps the show avoid making her journey feel isolated.

The mystery is the show’s weaker element

If you’re watching Neagley primarily for a complicated mystery, the series may leave you wanting more.

The central investigation has enough questions to keep the episodes moving, but some developments become fairly easy to anticipate once the major pieces are introduced.

Several villains also feel less convincing than the series’ central characters.

This creates an unusual situation where the protagonist is considerably more interesting than the mystery surrounding her.

Fortunately, the show understands what its strongest asset is.

The question isn’t always “What is going to happen?” so much as “What will Neagley do next?”

That distinction keeps the series watchable even when the plot itself becomes predictable.

Echo Canyon gives the story a darker edge

The Echo Canyon storyline also provides the series with an opportunity to explore manipulation and vulnerability beneath the surface of a seemingly helpful organisation.

The setup gives Neagley a reason to keep digging rather than simply chasing another conventional criminal.

The premise occasionally stretches credibility, however. Viewers who expect a grounded detective thriller may need to accept some of the genre’s larger-than-life storytelling choices.

For an action franchise such as Reacher, that isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker. The series is clearly more interested in forward momentum and character-driven action than in constructing an airtight procedural mystery.

Reacher’s appearance doesn’t overshadow Neagley

Because Neagley exists within the Reacher universe, viewers will naturally wonder how much Jack Reacher appears.

The answer, based on the season’s approach, is that the series keeps him in the background.

His appearance functions more as a connection to the wider franchise than as a reason to watch the spin-off.

That is an important creative choice. If Reacher had dominated the story, Neagley’s attempt to establish an independent identity could have been undermined.

Instead, the show largely lets its new lead stand on her own.

Is Neagley Season 1 worth watching?

Neagley isn’t a flawless action thriller.

The central mystery could have been more intricate, some antagonists need greater development and certain elements of the story require viewers to suspend disbelief.

But those shortcomings don’t completely derail the experience.

The series benefits from a clear understanding of its protagonist. Neagley isn’t Reacher with a different face. Her personality, fighting style and emotional history give the spin-off its own flavour.

Maria Sten is the key to that distinction. She makes Neagley compelling enough that the weaker parts of the plot become easier to overlook.

The series also leaves enough room within its world for future stories involving the character and the people she encounters.

Final verdict

Neagley succeeds by resisting the temptation to become a direct replica of Reacher. Its plot isn’t always as clever as it could be, but the character at its centre is strong enough to carry the series.

Maria Sten gives Frances Neagley a combination of physical confidence and emotional restraint that makes her interesting beyond her connection to Jack Reacher.

For viewers who enjoyed Neagley in the original series and wanted to know more about her, this spin-off provides a substantial opportunity to see the character take centre stage.

It may not reinvent the action-thriller formula, but it establishes a foundation that could support more stories.

Bottom line: Neagley is strongest when it focuses on Frances Neagley herself. The mystery is serviceable, but Maria Sten’s performance and the character’s distinct identity give the Reacher spin-off enough reason to exist on its own.
