An old interview featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan with television host David Letterman has resurfaced online, drawing renewed attention to her views on family, independence and the different cultural expectations surrounding hood in India and the United States.

During the conversation, Aishwarya spoke about continuing to live with her parents despite having built a highly successful career. Rather than seeing living away from family as an essential marker of hood, the actor explained why staying close to her parents made sense to her.

Her comments came during a discussion about the differences between Indian and American approaches to family life.

Aishwarya Rai questioned whether moving out was a social expectation

Letterman discussed the idea that young in the United States often leave their parents’ homes and establish independent lives relatively early.

Aishwarya appeared curious about whether this was simply an individual decision or something more deeply embedded in American society.

“I wouldn’t understand why, but that’s probably because that’s the way of life there,” she said, before asking whether moving out was something that “everybody has to” do or whether there was a broader social expectation around it.

The exchange highlighted how differently hood can be understood across cultures. While moving away from one’s parents can be viewed as an important step toward independence in some societies, multigenerational or close family living remains common in India.

Her career already kept her away from her family

Aishwarya then explained why remaining with her parents did not feel incompatible with having an independent career.

As an actor with an increasingly international professional schedule, she was already spending substantial amounts of time away from home. Travel for films, events and professional commitments meant that opportunities to be with her family were limited.

“By virtue of my job, I’m traveling out,” she explained. “You get to spend very little time with your family.”

She went on to describe how rare those moments could be, particularly when work required her to be in different cities or countries.

“We hardly get to meet each other, except in the one odd day we really get to spend time, have dinner together,” she said, adding that such occasions were rare and therefore especially meaningful to her.

For Aishwarya, living with her parents was not about an inability to establish herself independently. Instead, she saw family time as something worth protecting when her profession already created considerable physical distance.

‘Moving away from your family’ does not define independence

The discussion eventually turned directly to the question of whether Aishwarya considered herself an independent woman.

She answered confidently that she did, but challenged the idea that independence should automatically be associated with leaving one’s family home.

“Yes, yes. And I don’t see any reason why moving away from your family is a statement of independence,” she said.

The remark captured the central point of her argument: independence, in her view, was not necessarily determined by where a person lived.

Her comments also offered a glimpse into the cultural differences surrounding family relationships. In India, remaining close to one’s parents after becoming professionally successful can be entirely compatible with personal and financial independence, while expectations can differ in Western societies.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan built a career beyond Indian cinema

Aishwarya went on to become one of the most recognizable figures in Indian cinema after beginning her acting career with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Iruvar.

She subsequently established herself as a leading actor in Indian films while also developing an international profile. Her work at the Cannes Film Festival became an important part of her global public image, with her red-carpet appearances receiving considerable international attention over the years.

Her international acting credits include films such as Bride & Prejudice, The Mistress of Spices and The Pink Panther 2.

Despite her global career, her comments about family reflected a personal philosophy that did not necessarily equate professional success with physical separation from one’s parents.

Her last released film was Ponniyin Selvan: II

Aishwarya’s most recent released film remains Mani Ratnam’s historical epic Ponniyin Selvan: II, which arrived in theatres in April 2023.

The actor portrayed two characters in the film: Nandini and her mute mother, Mandakini Devi. The project marked another collaboration between Aishwarya and Ratnam, following their earlier work together.

Ponniyin Selvan: II continued the story established in the first instalment and received positive attention from audiences and critics following its release.

Why the old interview is resonating again

The resurfacing of Aishwarya’s Letterman interview has brought a decades-old discussion back into the spotlight at a time when conversations around independence, family responsibilities and multigenerational households remain relevant.

Her central argument was straightforward: becoming independent does not require abandoning proximity to family. For someone whose career already involved extensive travel and time away from home, being able to share occasional everyday moments with her parents was something she valued.
