Selena Gomez is taking another major step into prestige cinema, joining an intriguing new project from The Brutalist filmmaker Brady Corbet alongside Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and acclaimed actor Michael Fassbender.

The untitled film is already attracting attention at the Cannes Film Festival, despite Corbet and his team keeping much of the story firmly under wraps. The director has described the project as “really, really genre-defying,” while his comments about wanting to make an “X-rated” movie have added another layer of mystery around the ambitious production.

Cate Blanchett First Revealed the New Project

According to Variety, Blanchett discussed her upcoming collaboration with Corbet during a masterclass at Cannes.

News of the project subsequently grew after reports confirmed that Gomez and Fassbender had joined the cast.

Very little is currently known about the plot, with the filmmakers apparently determined to keep major story details confidential.

Corbet has, however, offered a few clues about the scope of the project.

Brady Corbet Calls the Film ‘Genre-Defying’

Corbet has described the upcoming movie as a genre-defying story that stretches across several periods.

The narrative reportedly moves from the 19th century into the modern era, with much of the story centred around the 1970s.

That broad timeline suggests a film with an unusually expansive narrative structure, consistent with Corbet’s reputation for making visually ambitious and formally distinctive movies.

The screenplay itself is also reportedly substantial.

The Script Is Around 200 Pages

During an appearance at the Storyhouse Screenwriting Festival in Dublin, Corbet reportedly revealed that the screenplay is approximately 200 pages long.

For comparison, his previous feature, The Brutalist, was based on a screenplay of around 165 pages and ultimately became a film lasting more than three hours.

The length of the new script has therefore fuelled speculation that Corbet is preparing another sprawling cinematic project.

Why the ‘X-Rated’ Description Has Created Buzz

Corbet’s previous comments about wanting to make an “X-rated” film have generated considerable curiosity around the project.

However, the precise nature of that description and how it relates to the finished film remain unclear.

With the plot still being closely guarded, the phrase has become one of the few pieces of information available about the movie, prompting additional speculation ahead of production.

Corbet Is Reportedly Using 65mm Film Cameras

The production is also expected to have a distinctive visual identity.

Reports indicate that Corbet is shooting with rare eight-perf 65mm cameras, a format capable of producing large-scale, highly detailed images.

The approach continues the filmmaker’s interest in ambitious visual storytelling seen in Vox Lux and The Brutalist.

Corbet’s The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody, became one of the most acclaimed films of his career and earned multiple major awards and nominations.

Selena Gomez Continues Her Move Into Prestige Cinema

For Gomez, the project represents another significant development in her acting career.

She has spent years balancing music, television and her beauty business while gradually taking on more substantial film roles.

Her filmography includes Spring Breakers and the recent musical crime drama Emilia Pérez, which brought her further recognition within the international film circuit.

Gomez starred in Emilia Pérez alongside Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz, with the ensemble receiving major attention at Cannes.

Gomez’s Cannes Connection Continues

Gomez’s involvement in Emilia Pérez also established a strong connection between the actress and Cannes.

The film premiered at the festival and its ensemble was recognised with the Best Actress prize.

Her new collaboration with Corbet therefore places her once again in the orbit of one of cinema’s most prestigious international festivals.

The move also reflects Gomez’s growing willingness to explore projects that sit outside conventional mainstream Hollywood filmmaking.

Selena Gomez Remains a Major Pop-Culture Figure

Despite her increasing focus on acting, Gomez remains one of the most visible figures in global pop culture.

Her music career, beauty company and television work have kept her in the spotlight, while her relationship and marriage to Benny Blanco have also generated significant online attention.

The upcoming Corbet film could nevertheless represent one of her most ambitious acting choices yet.

The Bottom Line

Selena Gomez is joining Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender in Brady Corbet’s mysterious new feature, a large-scale project whose plot and title remain under wraps.

Corbet has described the movie as “really, really genre-defying” and revealed that its story spans multiple eras, while reports suggest the screenplay runs to roughly 200 pages. His comments about wanting to make an “X-rated” film have further intensified curiosity.

With Corbet’s distinctive filmmaking style and a cast featuring three major international stars, the untitled project is shaping up to be one of Gomez’s most intriguing cinematic ventures yet.
