Suriya and Mamitha Baiju in Vishwanath and Sons

Vishwanath and Sons takes a familiar family-drama framework and gives it a distinctly modern makeover. Led by Suriya and Mamitha Baiju, the film blends family emotions, comedy and an unconventional parenthood story without leaning too heavily on melodrama.

Directed by Venky Atluri, the film follows a wealthy, accomplished bachelor whose carefully structured life changes dramatically after he returns from the United States with a baby born through surrogacy. What begins as a straightforward family setup gradually develops into a story about parenthood, relationships, responsibility and the meaning of family.

Story: An Unusual Family Situation

Suriya plays Sanjay Vishwanath, an Olympic shooting gold medallist who goes on to become a successful billionaire businessman. Despite his professional achievements, Sanjay remains unmarried in his 40s, much to the concern of his mother, played by Radhika.

His life takes an unexpected turn when he returns from the United States a year after travelling there with a baby boy born through surrogacy.

The situation becomes considerably more complicated when the child requires a bone marrow transplant. Sanjay must locate the surrogate mother in the US and bring her to India so that his son can receive the treatment he needs.

His determination leads him to bend some rules, but the real story begins once the surrogate becomes part of his family.

The film then explores the changing relationship between the woman, Sanjay, his son and the rest of the family.

First Half Is the Film’s Biggest Strength

The first half of Vishwanath and Sons is where the film is at its most engaging.

Venky Atluri keeps the narrative moving with a combination of contemporary humour, family interactions and emotional moments. The writing largely avoids the excessive sentimentality often associated with mainstream family dramas.

The biggest surprise is Mamitha Baiju.

Her character brings an entirely different energy to Sanjay’s otherwise controlled world. Mamitha’s performance feels relaxed and convincing, particularly in the way she handles the character’s body language, dialogue delivery and accent. She doesn’t appear to be forcing the character into a stereotypical portrayal.

That natural quality makes her scenes among the most enjoyable portions of the film.

Suriya Brings Maturity to the Lead Role

Suriya is well cast as Sanjay Vishwanath.

Rather than playing the character as an excessively flamboyant businessman, he gives Sanjay a restrained sophistication. His performance communicates the character’s confidence while leaving room for vulnerability as his relationship with his son and the surrogate develops.

His scenes with Radhika are another highlight.

The mother-son relationship has warmth without becoming excessively sentimental. Their interactions provide the film with an emotional foundation and help explain Sanjay’s personality beyond his wealth and professional achievements.

The film also benefits from its contemporary urban setting, modern dialogue and references that give it a more current identity.

The Second Half Loses Some Momentum

The film’s biggest weakness arrives in the second half.

Although the narrative initially maintains the energy established before the interval, the central relationship begins to feel somewhat repetitive. The age-gap aspect of the relationship becomes more prominent, and some of the freshness that defined the first half starts to disappear.

Radhika’s character receives an emotionally satisfying arc, but the film briefly struggles to establish a strong direction after that point.

The subplot involving the marriage of Sanjay’s second mother’s daughter is another weak spot. It isn’t particularly unpleasant to watch, but its connection to the central story feels limited. The sequence occupies valuable screen time without adding enough to the primary emotional conflict.

Nassar’s appearance provides some welcome variation during this stretch and helps break up the proceedings.

Fortunately, the film gradually regains its emotional footing as it approaches the climax.

A Heartwarming Final Act

The climax is one of the reasons Vishwanath and Sons ultimately works.

The final act brings the different emotional threads together and gives the principal characters meaningful resolution. Rather than relying on an unnecessarily dramatic payoff, the film chooses warmth and emotional closure.

That approach suits the movie.

The story is ultimately less interested in delivering a conventional family melodrama and more interested in showing how an unexpected relationship can change people’s understanding of family and responsibility.

Mamitha Baiju Emerges as the Standout

While Suriya provides the film with its mature central presence, Mamitha Baiju is arguably the standout performer.

Her performance gives the movie much of its freshness, particularly during the first half. She brings spontaneity to scenes that could otherwise have felt predictable.

Suriya, meanwhile, delivers a controlled and classy performance that fits the character’s personality. Radhika adds emotional depth to the family portions, making the relationships feel grounded.

The supporting cast also contributes effectively without overshadowing the central characters.

Limited Songs Work in the Film’s Favour

Another interesting choice is the film’s relatively restrained use of songs.

Instead of constantly interrupting the narrative with musical sequences, Vishwanath and Sons largely allows its characters and story to drive the experience. The popular Mamitha Baiju track and an emotional number stand out, while the rest of the film keeps its focus on the narrative.

That restraint works particularly well for a family drama of this nature.

Technical Aspects

The production values from Sithara Entertainments are impressive, with the urban locations and polished visuals complementing the film’s contemporary tone.

G.V. Prakash Kumar’s background score is particularly effective during the emotional portions. It adds weight to important scenes without overwhelming them.

There are a few slightly soft or blurry shots during the opening portions, but they do not significantly affect the overall viewing experience.

What Works

  • Suriya’s mature and understated performance
  • Mamitha Baiju’s natural and lively portrayal
  • Strong first-half writing
  • Good balance of humour and emotion
  • Venky Atluri’s contemporary treatment
  • Warm chemistry between the central characters
  • Strong emotional payoff in the climax
  • Feel-good family atmosphere

What Doesn’t

  • The second half loses some momentum
  • The central relationship becomes repetitive at times
  • The second mother’s daughter’s marriage subplot feels underdeveloped
  • Some portions in the middle could have been trimmed

Verdict

Vishwanath and Sons is a pleasant new-age family entertainer that successfully combines humour, emotion and contemporary storytelling.

The film isn’t entirely consistent, particularly during parts of its second half, but its strong performances and emotionally satisfying final act make up for many of those shortcomings.

Suriya delivers a classy, mature performance, but Mamitha Baiju emerges as the film’s biggest surprise and arguably its standout performer. Radhika also adds considerable emotional weight to the family dynamic.

For viewers looking for a relatively light, warm-hearted family film with a modern setting and unconventional emotional premise, Vishwanath and Sons makes for an enjoyable watch.
