Rudra: Mainak Banerjee and Tonni Laha Roy Lead a Mystery of Secrets, Justice and Revenge

Directed by Arindam Chakrabarty, the series stars Mainak Banerjee and Tonni Laha Roy in pivotal roles. Mainak Banerjee Plays a Troubled Private Investigator

Mainak Banerjee takes on the titular role of Rudra Sen, a private investigator whose life has been shaped by personal tragedy.

Having withdrawn from much of the world, Rudra has chosen an isolated existence. His quiet routine, however, is disrupted when he agrees to investigate a case that quickly proves more complicated than it initially appears.

As Rudra follows the available clues, seemingly disconnected incidents begin to form a larger pattern. The investigation eventually points towards secrets that have remained hidden for decades, forcing him to confront a mystery in which the past continues to influence the present.

For Mainak, the role also represents a departure from his previous work.

“Rudra is a very unique character, and honestly, I have never played anything like this before,” the actor said, recalling his first discussion with director Arindam Chakrabarty.

Mainak added that he immediately agreed to the project after hearing the story and character brief. He also highlighted the long-standing professional relationship he shares with the director and said he particularly enjoyed Rudra’s look.

Calling the project a gripping crime thriller, the actor expressed hope that viewers will respond positively to his new avatar.

Tonni Laha Roy’s Paramita Searches for Justice

Tonni Laha Roy plays Paramita, a woman whose personal search for justice becomes closely connected with Rudra’s investigation.

Paramita lives abroad because of her work, but her connection with her hometown and her father remains strong. Her life changes dramatically after her father’s death, when questions surrounding the circumstances of his demise lead her back home.

Unable to accept what happened, Paramita begins looking for answers. Her search eventually brings her into contact with Rudra, setting both characters on a path towards a mystery that reaches far beyond the immediate case.

For Tonni, Paramita is particularly meaningful because the character differs from the negative or morally grey roles she often gets offered.

“Paramita is very close to my heart because she is so different from the characters I usually get to play,” the actress said.

She described Paramita as positive, grounded and relatable — a woman who may live abroad but remains closely connected to her roots and family.

The emotional dimension of the character also presented challenges for the actress. Tonni said that Paramita’s relationship with her father and the emotions surrounding his story affected her personally, making some scenes difficult to perform.

Yet it was precisely that emotional complexity that made the role meaningful for her.

Tonni hopes audiences will identify with Paramita’s journey and connect with a character who, in her words, is strong without being loud and emotional without losing herself.

A Detective Story With a Different Approach

Director Arindam Chakrabarty says Rudra has been designed to move away from familiar formulas associated with detective and crime narratives.

According to the director, the team consciously avoided predictable investigative storytelling and instead aimed to create something more unconventional. Research and character presentation were also important elements of the process, with Mainak and the other actors receiving noticeably different looks for the series.

“We have consciously tried to move away from predictable detective narratives and create something fresh, intriguing and unconventional,” Chakrabarty said.

The director’s comments suggest that the series is intended to rely not only on the central investigation but also on atmosphere, characterisation and the gradual revelation of information.

A Mystery That Connects the Past With the Present

At the centre of Rudra is a question that becomes increasingly difficult to ignore: how are the events of the present connected to a crime committed decades ago?

As Rudra follows the trail of clues and Paramita continues her search for justice, the investigation appears to uncover a network of secrets, guilt and unresolved consequences.

The series also leaves room for a larger question about revenge. When old crimes resurface, justice and personal retribution can easily become difficult to distinguish, creating the possibility of conflict between what is legally right and what the characters believe they are owed.

The supporting cast includes Souradeep Roy as Avra, Arna Dhar as Maitreyi and Priya Mondal as Anamika in significant roles.
