Michelle Ryan has opened up about Zoe Slater’s upcoming exit from EastEnders, revealing that the character’s death was planned as part of her one-year return to the BBC soap. “My agent and I sort of discussed from the outset that it would be a year, and I think that when we came to look at where Zoe was going, it just seemed like a natural conclusion for her to die,” Ryan said.

The actor explained that another departure would not have fitted the journey Zoe had been on, particularly because of her relationship with her children.

“For her to run away again would have gone against everything she’d fought for: for her children,” she added.

Zoe has previously left Walford, making another escape potentially feel repetitive within the character’s story. For Ryan, a permanent ending therefore offered a more meaningful conclusion.

‘I completely understand that’

Although Ryan admitted that it was sad to learn that Zoe would be killed off, she said she understood the creative decision.

“So as sad as it was to hear that Zoe was going to be killed off, I was like, ‘I completely understand that,’” she recalled.

Ryan also suggested that returning to EastEnders was never intended to become a permanent commitment. The actor said she enjoys having variety in her career and the opportunity to take on different roles.

“And I’d always felt that I would be going back for a year because I really do like the variety I have with my career and playing different parts,” she said.

Her comments offer some clarity for viewers who had wondered whether Zoe’s unexpected death was connected to disagreements between Ryan and the production team.

Ryan also addressed speculation about what was happening behind the scenes, making it clear that she remains on good terms with the show and its producers.

“I’m not somebody who’s just going to talk bullshit, and, actually, Ben has been so supportive the entire time, and I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t true,” Ryan said.

She also expressed hope that viewers will embrace the storyline rather than focus on speculation surrounding her departure.

“So I think that it will be nice if people can embrace the storyline,” she added.

Ryan has already completed filming her scenes for EastEnders, meaning Zoe’s final chapter has been filmed even though audiences are still waiting to see how the storyline ultimately unfolds.

Zoe Slater first became a major figure in EastEnders during Ryan’s original run on the soap from 2000 to 2005. The character’s return therefore generated considerable interest among longtime viewers.
