Diana Penty discusses intuition, fashion and her everyday lifestyle

Diana Penty has built a career that moves comfortably between cinema, fashion and international appearances. But away from the spotlight, the actor says she prefers a quieter rhythm—one guided by intuition, simple routines and the freedom to take life as it comes.

Fourteen years after making her film debut as Meera in Cocktail, Diana Penty has developed a career defined less by constant visibility and more by considered choices.

From films such as Happy Bhag Jayegi and Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran to her Malayalam debut Salute, Diana has moved across languages, genres and characters without appearing particularly interested in following a predetermined career formula. Her recent work includes Chhaava and Do You Wanna Partner, while her presence at major fashion events and international platforms has established another dimension to her public image.

Yet the Diana seen on a red carpet is not necessarily the Diana who spends her days away from cameras.

During a recent visit to Bengaluru for the launch of Rumi Fine Fragrances, the actor spoke about trusting her instincts, taking genuine downtime between projects, her growing interest in interiors and the difference between her fashion persona and everyday style.

For Diana, selecting a project increasingly comes down to an instinctive response rather than a checklist.

She says her intuition has repeatedly helped her recognise the stories she wants to pursue.

“Something that my gut and intuition tell me is that I should close my eyes and do it without questioning,” she says.

Over the years, she has learned to pay attention to the feeling she gets while reading a script. If a story makes her curious enough to keep turning the pages, she considers that a meaningful sign.

“When you read a script like that — you just know,” Diana says.

For her, the attraction is not limited to the character. The entire story has to hold her attention, and she needs to be able to imagine herself enjoying the film as an audience member.

“If the character appeals to me, the overall story just feels right; that’s the kind of film I’d do,” she explains.

That instinct also helps her recognise when a project may look promising on paper but does not personally connect with her.

“I’ve realised that my intuition is what I should always follow,” she says.

Her idea of a break is simply being

In an industry where actors are often expected to maintain a relentless professional rhythm, Diana appears comfortable with periods when very little is happening.

Between films and other projects, she says she does not necessarily look for an elaborate self-improvement routine.

“Frankly, the time between films or any kind of projects for me is just ‘being,’” she says.

That can mean going to the gym, meeting friends or simply spending time at home.

She also finds an unexpected form of relaxation in organising her surroundings.

Clearing out a wardrobe or reorganising a space can help her feel mentally lighter, she says. That interest has gradually developed into a fascination with interior decorating.

“I love interior decorating — I just love it!” Diana says.

She enjoys changing different corners of a room and experimenting with how a space can feel.

For the actor, the process is therapeutic rather than simply aesthetic.

Why Diana avoids rigid routines

Diana’s approach to downtime is deliberately flexible.

She says strict schedules and highly structured routines can feel stressful, particularly when she is trying to spend time with herself.

“I don’t like sticking to schedules or strict routines because, for some reason, that stresses me out,” she says.

Instead, she prefers to decide what feels right on a particular day.

That might mean exercising, seeing friends, organising her belongings or working on an interior space. There is no fixed formula.

“I just go with the flow and take the day as it comes,” she says.

It is a philosophy that seems to extend beyond her personal life and into the way she approaches her career: less about maintaining momentum for its own sake and more about responding to what feels meaningful.

From red-carpet glamour to classic everyday style

Diana has become familiar with the visual language of high fashion, whether at major events or international appearances.

Her red-carpet looks can be polished, dramatic and highly styled. Yet she does not see fashion as a separate personality.

“I don’t think of fashion as an alter ego because it has always been a form of self-expression for me,” she says.

For Diana, fashion is a creative collaboration. She enjoys working with designers who have a distinctive point of view and sees major appearances as opportunities to explore that creativity.

Away from the cameras, however, her preferences are considerably more understated.

“My personal style has always leaned towards classic, timeless pieces — nothing too loud or overthought,” she says.

That contrast does not bother her.

Instead, she sees both sides as equally genuine.

‘Both are authentically me’

The distinction between Diana’s public fashion image and her everyday personality is perhaps best understood as a difference in context rather than identity.

On a red carpet, fashion becomes part of her professional expression. In ordinary life, comfort and simplicity take precedence.

“I’ve never been someone who enjoys being the centre of attention just for the sake of it,” she says.

That helps explain the balance between the highly photographed version of Diana and the quieter personality she describes in conversation.

“There’s definitely a contrast between the glamour people see at events and who I am in everyday life,” she acknowledges. “But both are authentically me.”

For Diana, one is work and creative expression; the other is where she feels most at ease.

A quieter definition of growth

Diana Penty’s career has unfolded without the need for constant reinvention. Her choices suggest a different idea of professional growth—one that allows room for instinct, pauses and personal interests alongside ambition.

Whether she is reading a script, clearing out her wardrobe, rearranging a room or preparing for a major fashion appearance, the common thread appears to be a preference for authenticity over performance.

After more than a decade in the public eye, Diana seems increasingly comfortable with that distinction.

The glamour may be visible on the red carpet, but away from it, her idea of fulfilment is considerably simpler: choosing work that speaks to her, creating spaces she enjoys and allowing herself enough quiet to simply be.
