Caitríona Balfe Joins Disney’s Live-Action Tangled as Queen Arianna

Disney is expanding the cast of its upcoming live-action Tangled, with Outlander star Caitríona Balfe stepping into the role of Queen Arianna, Rapunzel’s long-lost mother.

Balfe joins an increasingly high-profile ensemble for the new adaptation of Disney’s 2010 animated musical fantasy. The casting announcement adds another major name to a project that is already attracting considerable attention from fans of the original film.

Caitríona Balfe Will Play Rapunzel’s Mother

Balfe will portray Queen Arianna, the biological mother of Rapunzel.

The character was an important part of Rapunzel’s backstory in the animated Tangled, even though she had limited screen time. Her connection to Rapunzel forms part of the emotional foundation of the story surrounding the princess and her search for her true identity.

Disney has also announced additional casting for the live-action adaptation.

Elliot Cowan, known for The Crown, will play King Frederic, Rapunzel’s father.

Brothers Patrick and Hugo McPherson are set to portray the Stabbington twins, the pair of criminals who were part of Flynn Rider’s story in the animated film.

They join a cast that already includes Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel.

Andor star Diego Luna is also attached to the project as a new character named Hawthorne.

What Is Disney’s Live-Action Tangled About?

The original Tangled introduced audiences to Rapunzel, a young woman with extraordinarily long magical hair who has spent most of her life isolated inside a tower.

Her world changes when Flynn Rider, a charming thief on the run, unexpectedly enters her life.

Michael Gracey Directs the Live-Action Adaptation

The new Tangled is being directed by Michael Gracey, with a screenplay from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor.

The original Tangled, released in 2010, featured Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider. The voice cast also included Donna Murphy, Ron Perlman, Brad Garrett and Jeffrey Tambor.

When Will the Live-Action Tangled Be Released?

Disney has announced a theatrical release date of March 31, 2028 for the live-action Tangled.

With principal casting continuing to take shape, the film is still some time away from reaching theaters.
