A US-based Indian-origin professional has sparked conversations online after revealing the expenses she deliberately avoids, despite earning a combined annual income of $250,000 with her husband.

Shivee Chauhan, who works as a Senior Examiner and previously had a career on Wall Street, often shares insights about money, motherhood, and immigrant life. In a recent video, she explained her approach to spending as a “financially responsible adult” and a working parent.

1. No Obsession With Luxury Bags

Chauhan says she avoids buying multiple high-end handbags. For her, the practicality doesn’t justify the price. She questions the need for items that cost thousands of dollars but are rarely used in daily life.

2. Skipping ‘Dupes’ to Avoid Double Spending

While many people opt for cheaper alternatives to luxury items, she prefers not to. According to her, buying a dupe often leads to eventually purchasing the original as well — effectively doubling the expense instead of saving money.

3. Minimal Spending on Grooming Services

Instead of regularly visiting salons for hair removal, Chauhan uses an epilator at home. She has followed this routine for years, saving both time and recurring costs.

4. Saying No to Fast Fashion

She has completely stepped away from fast fashion brands in recent years. Her reasoning is simple: lower-quality clothing doesn’t last long and ends up costing more over time. She now focuses on durability and long-term value.

5. Avoiding Everyday Dining Expenses

Chauhan is selective about eating out. While she enjoys dining for special occasions or unique experiences, she avoids spending on routine meals or daily coffee runs.

Instead, she prefers home-cooked food, which allows her to monitor nutrition and reduce unnecessary spending. She also points out that skipping daily coffee purchases helps cut down on waste.

Why Her Approach Stands Out

Her perspective highlights a key principle of personal finance: high income does not automatically mean high spending. Instead of focusing on how much she earns, Chauhan emphasizes how consciously she chooses to spend.

Key Takeaway

Smart financial habits aren’t about restriction — they’re about intentional choices. Even with a high income, disciplined spending can lead to better savings, reduced waste, and long-term financial stability.
