Priyadarshan Reacts to Daughter Kalyani’s Success with Lokah; Shares Update on 100th Film with Mohanlal

Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan is currently preparing for the release of his upcoming film Bhooth Bangla, which reunites him with actor Akshay Kumar after several years. The fantasy horror-comedy is scheduled to arrive in theatres on April 10, 2026.

During a recent conversation with IndyaStory, the director opened up about his ongoing projects and also shared his thoughts on the growing success of his daughter, actress Kalyani Priyadarshan, whose recent film Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra has been making waves.

Speaking about his daughter’s achievements, Priyadarshan admitted that he feels proud of her work but revealed that the two rarely discuss their professional lives.

According to the filmmaker, their filmmaking approaches belong to very different generations.

He explained that while Kalyani represents a newer era of cinema with its own creative style, he comes from a more traditional filmmaking background. Because of this, they usually keep their work discussions separate.

“As a father, I am very proud that she has done a wonderful job,” he said, recalling how he once believed she might never pursue acting.

Priyadarshan even remembered telling actor Nagarjuna Akkineni that his daughter would not be interested in films. At the time, Kalyani was studying architecture and had little connection with film sets during her childhood.

However, things changed when Nagarjuna contacted him about the possibility of her acting in films. Initially doubtful, Priyadarshan said he believed she might not pursue acting seriously.

Kalyani eventually convinced him by saying she wanted to give it a try and had nothing to lose. If things did not work out, she planned to return to architecture.

The director noted that she worked hard to adapt to the industry, even learning Malayalam despite not growing up in Kerala.

He added that today’s younger generation is highly determined and goes to great lengths to achieve their goals.

Speaking about Lokah, Priyadarshan appreciated the scale of the project and compared its ambition to international superhero-style films, while noting that the story still feels relatable to Indian audiences.

When asked whether he attends premieres of Kalyani’s movies, the filmmaker responded humorously that he usually has “better things to do.” He admitted that he has watched only a few of her films, mostly after hearing strong word-of-mouth from others.

Plans for his 100th film with Mohanlal

Looking ahead, Priyadarshan was also asked about his 100th directorial project, which is expected to feature Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in the lead role.

The director said he personally prefers making serious films but often ends up directing comedies because of audience demand.

He jokingly remarked that he might make one more comedy film before moving on, suggesting that it could possibly be his final venture in the genre.
