Holi is a festival filled with joy, colour and celebration. However, the chemical-based colours and synthetic gulal commonly available in markets can trigger skin irritation, itching, rashes and even allergies if proper precautions are not taken.

A thoughtful Holi skin care routine can help you enjoy the festivities without compromising your skin health.

Create a Protective Shield Before Playing Holi

According to dermatologist Dr. Amarjeet Singh, preparing your skin before stepping out is essential.

He recommends applying coconut oil or a good-quality moisturiser on the face and other exposed body parts. This forms a protective barrier over the skin, preventing harmful chemicals from penetrating pores deeply. It also makes post-Holi cleansing significantly easier.

Changing Weather and Increased Skin Sensitivity

Holi typically coincides with seasonal transitions, when the skin becomes more sensitive. Even minor negligence during this time can lead to prolonged skin issues.

Dr. Singh advises opting for natural or herbal colours whenever possible. Some low-quality gulal may contain harmful chemicals or even tiny glass particles, which can cause cuts, infections or serious irritation if rubbed forcefully onto the skin.

What to Do If the Colour Is Stubborn

Many people use harsh soaps or strong chemical products to remove persistent stains. However, this can worsen skin damage.

Dr. Amarjeet Singh suggests:

  • First rinse thoroughly with plain water.
  • Use your regular mild soap.
  • Avoid repeated scrubbing if the colour does not come off immediately.

Excessive rubbing can lead to peeling, redness and micro-injuries. In most cases, residual colour fades naturally within a few days.

When to See a Doctor

If you experience itching, burning sensations, rashes or eye irritation after playing Holi, consult a medical professional instead of self-medicating at home.

Hospitals often report a surge in skin and eye-related cases after the festival. Preventive care, including oiling the skin beforehand and choosing safer colours, can significantly reduce the risk of complications.
