Taapsee Pannu has responded to the box office performance of her latest film Assi, stating that the strong emotional reactions to the film suggest there is “something about it” worth noticing.
Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Assi released in theatres on February 20 to largely positive reviews. However, commercially, the film has had a modest start, earning ₹11.12 crore gross worldwide in its first week.

Taking to Instagram, Taapsee shared a video reflecting on how different films evoke different types of responses. She noted that some films are praised for their storytelling, others for performances, while some are labelled entertaining and others uncomfortable — yet necessary.
Referring to Sinha’s earlier film Thappad, she said a similar wave of intense discussions surrounded that project upon its release. Drawing a parallel, she added that Assi has also prompted strong reactions, with viewers writing articles and creating videos dissecting its themes.

Assi’s First-Week Box Office Numbers
According to trade estimates cited by Sacnilk, Assi collected approximately ₹7.33 crore net in India during its opening week, contributing to a worldwide gross of ₹11.12 crore.
The film saw its strongest numbers over the opening weekend, reportedly earning around ₹1 crore on Friday and approximately ₹1.6 crore on both Saturday and Sunday. Weekday collections dipped below ₹1 crore per day thereafter.
Compared to last month’s courtroom drama Haq starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, which reportedly grossed ₹21 crore worldwide in its first week, Assi has performed more moderately.
Film Details and Audience Response
Produced under the banners of Benaras Mediaworks and T-Series Films, the film features Taapsee as an advocate handling a sexual assault case. The cast also includes Kani Kusruti, Revathy and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.
