Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Row: Producers Defend Rights Over Chunnari Chunnari and Ishq Sona Hai

The upcoming Bollywood film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has become embroiled in a legal controversy after allegations of copyright infringement were raised by Puja Entertainment India Limited (PEIL), headed by producer Vashu Bhagnani.

The dispute revolves around the use of the iconic songs Chunnari Chunnari and Ishq Sona Hai, with PEIL claiming that elements associated with its intellectual property were used without proper authorisation.

Tips Music Issues Public Statement

Responding to the allegations, Tips Music Limited released a public notice reaffirming that it is the “absolute and lawful owner” of all relevant copyrights and associated rights connected to the songs in question.

The company denied all allegations made by PEIL and stated that every usage involving the songs had been carried out lawfully and in accordance with applicable regulations.

Tips Music also confirmed that it has initiated legal proceedings to protect its rights and has already approached the Supreme Court of India regarding the matter through an order dated May 22, 2026.

In its statement, the company stressed that it remains committed to safeguarding its intellectual property and will continue pursuing all available legal remedies with guidance from its legal advisors.

What Triggered the Legal Conflict?

The controversy reportedly began after producer Vashu Bhagnani alleged that Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by David Dhawan, incorporated references and creative elements from the 1999 film Biwi No.1 without obtaining proper permission.

The primary focus of the dispute is the famous song Chunnari Chunnari, which Bhagnani claims was recreated or adapted without authorisation from Pooja Entertainment.

Reports also suggest that the legal battle extends beyond a single track and involves rights connected to several classic films under the Pooja Entertainment banner, including Coolie No.1, Hero No.1, and Biwi No.1.

Bhagnani reportedly approached a court in Katihar, Bihar, seeking protection for the intellectual property rights associated with these films and songs.

According to reports, the court directed all parties involved to maintain status quo while the matter undergoes further legal review.

Producers Stand Firm on Ownership Rights

Despite the ongoing dispute, Tips Music has maintained a strong stance regarding ownership of the music rights and has categorically defended the legal use of the songs.

The company’s statement signals that the matter may continue through multiple legal forums as both sides assert competing claims over intellectual property ownership and usage permissions.

Bhagnani has reportedly stated that he would reconsider his objections if the filmmakers are able to prove that no unauthorised material was used in the project.

Film Scheduled for June Release

Directed by David Dhawan, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai stars Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles.

Despite the legal controversy, the film remains scheduled for theatrical release on June 5, 2026.

The dispute has sparked widespread discussion within the entertainment industry about music rights, remakes and the growing importance of intellectual property protection in Bollywood.
