Shanaya Kapoor Says Shelved ‘Bedhadak’ Shaped Her Journey: “It Made Me Who I Am”

Bollywood actor Shanaya Kapoor has opened up about the shelving of her much-anticipated debut film Bedhadak, originally announced by Dharma Productions. In a recent interview, the actress reflected on how the experience ultimately strengthened her resolve and helped refine her craft.

“Everything Happens for a Reason”

Shanaya shared that although the project being shelved was initially disappointing, she now views the setback as transformative. According to her, the period away from the camera allowed her to focus intensely on training and self-improvement.

She explained that certain projects materialising and then not moving forward played a crucial role in shaping her resilience. Instead of being discouraged, she used the time to work on her acting skills and prepare herself more thoroughly for future opportunities.

Family Support and Perspective

Shanaya credited her father, actor Sanjay Kapoor, for offering practical advice during the uncertain phase. He encouraged her to concentrate on what was within her control — improving her performance abilities — rather than worrying about industry dynamics.

She revealed that he would often advise her to rehearse scenes independently, even if she was not actively filming, reinforcing the idea that consistency and discipline matter more than circumstances.

From Assistant Director to Actor

Before stepping in front of the camera, Shanaya began her film journey behind the scenes as an assistant director on Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl.

Though Bedhadak did not materialise, she eventually made her acting debut opposite Vikrant Massey in Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan. While the film struggled at the box office, it marked her formal entry into Bollywood.

Latest Release: Tu Yaa Main

Shanaya is currently seen in Tu Yaa Main, co-starring Adarsh Gourav. The survival thriller is directed by Bejoy Nambiar and backed by producer Aanand L Rai.

The film is a remake of the Thai thriller The Pool and reportedly opened to a modest box office start, earning approximately ₹4.75 crore worldwide. Critical response has been mixed, but the project represents another step forward in Shanaya’s evolving career.
