Regina Cassandra Opens Up on Bollywood Double Standards: ‘Judged for My Roots, Not My Talent’

Actor Regina Cassandra has spoken candidly about facing bias and unequal treatment in Bollywood, stating that she was often judged for her South Indian roots rather than her professional credentials.

Having worked extensively in Tamil and Telugu cinema before stepping into Hindi films, Regina said she encountered skepticism despite being fluent in Hindi and delivering performances in her own voice.

Accent Doubts and Industry Perception

In a recent interview, Regina shared that questions were raised about her accent simply because she is from the South. She clarified that she can read, write, and speak Hindi comfortably, yet assumptions were made about her linguistic abilities.

What troubled her more was being treated like a newcomer in Bollywood, even after years of experience in the film industry. According to her, there is a visible double standard in how professionalism is perceived.

She observed that when Hindi-speaking actors assert themselves, it is often labeled as confidence or professionalism. However, when actors from South India display the same clarity or firmness, they are sometimes branded as arrogant.

Regina noted that the bias she experienced was not limited to direct comments. She described situations where the overall approach and behavior of people made it clear that she was being underestimated.

The discomfort, she admitted, made her hesitant to accept certain Hindi projects for a period. However, she also acknowledged that not every experience was negative and that she did receive meaningful opportunities along the way.

Her experience highlights broader conversations about regional identity, gender stereotypes, and representation within the Indian entertainment ecosystem.

Despite working in Mumbai, Regina emphasized that her emotional connection remains deeply rooted in South Indian cinema, where her career began and where she first gained recognition.

She stressed that in a culturally diverse country like India, language and regional background should not determine professional value. Equal respect, she said, should extend across industries.

Career Journey and Upcoming Projects

Regina made her acting debut with Kanda Naal Mudhal in 2005 and went on to establish herself in Tamil and Telugu cinema. She entered Bollywood with Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and later made a special appearance in Thalaivii.

Her recent Hindi projects include Jaat and Kesari Chapter 2. She also has Mookuthi Amman 2 in the pipeline, along with additional Hindi ventures.
