Actor Lakshmi Manchu has firmly spoken against the idea of normalising abuse within marriages, stating that silent suffering should never be considered acceptable. While promoting her upcoming films Pookie (Tamil) and Bookie (Telugu), she shared her thoughts on dignity, self-respect, and the changing dynamics of modern relationships.

“Do What Gives You Happiness”

Speaking at a recent event in Hyderabad, Lakshmi stressed that personal happiness should remain a priority in any partnership. She observed that many couples begin their journey with shared dreams in their early 20s, but relationships weaken when effort fades or when one partner takes the marriage for granted.

She maintained that while enduring hardship is a personal choice, it must never be glorified. According to her, individuals must decide for themselves what they are willing to tolerate — but self-respect should remain non-negotiable.

Referencing Thappad and Drawing the Line

Lakshmi cited the film Thappad, starring Taapsee Pannu, as a powerful example that resonated with her perspective. The film, which explores the emotional fallout of a husband slapping his wife, reinforced her belief that physical violence has no place in marriage.

Questioning the acceptance of such behaviour, she remarked that if parents do not raise a hand against their children, no spouse has the right to do so. For Lakshmi, respect forms the foundation of any lasting relationship.

Changing Social Norms and Modern Courtship

Reflecting on shifting societal attitudes, Lakshmi noted that relationships today are more openly accepted than in previous generations. However, she feels emotional sincerity has diminished.

She pointed out that social media has significantly altered expectations and communication styles. In her view, traditional courtship once required genuine effort, whereas modern interactions can sometimes feel repetitive and impersonal. She believes it is important for women to assess whether intentions are authentic rather than convenient.

Personal Life and Evolving Views

Lakshmi married Andy Srinivasan in 2006, and the couple share a daughter, Vidya Nirvana. Due to professional commitments, they currently reside in different countries. She also acknowledged that although she was raised with traditional gender role expectations, her outlook has evolved over time.

Through her recent remarks, Lakshmi Manchu reinforces a clear message: relationships must be rooted in equality, effort, and dignity — never fear or silent endurance.
