Her manager confirmed the news to Variety. According to her agency, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), O’Hara passed away Friday at her Los Angeles home following a brief illness.

Widely regarded as one of the most versatile performers of her generation, O’Hara leaves behind a body of work that defined modern comedy — from anarchic sketch television to heartfelt, character-driven storytelling that resonated across generations.

A Career That Shaped Comedy

Born in Toronto, Canada, Catherine O’Hara rose to prominence in the late 1970s as a founding member of “Second City Television” (SCTV), the influential sketch comedy series she co-created alongside Eugene Levy.

Her work on SCTV earned her four Emmy nominations and one win, establishing her as a fearless comic performer with impeccable timing and emotional range. The show became a breeding ground for future legends and laid the foundation for O’Hara’s lifelong collaborations.

From Cult Classics to Hollywood Staples

O’Hara seamlessly transitioned from sketch comedy into film, becoming a fixture in some of Hollywood’s most enduring titles. Her credits include:

  • “Beetlejuice” (1988) as the eccentric Delia Deetz
  • “After Hours” (1985)
  • “Home Alone” (1990) and “Home Alone 2” (1992) as Kate McCallister, the frantic but loving mother of Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin

Her performance in Home Alone became iconic, and O’Hara maintained a close friendship with Culkin throughout his life. She notably honored him at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2023.

The Christopher Guest Era

O’Hara was a central figure in Christopher Guest’s mockumentary universe, delivering unforgettable performances in:

  • “Best in Show”
  • “Waiting for Guffman”
  • “A Mighty Wind”
  • “For Your Consideration”

These roles cemented her reputation as a master of improvisational comedy — capable of balancing absurdity with deep emotional authenticity.

A Late-Career Renaissance: Moira Rose

In what many consider one of the greatest late-career renaissances in television history, O’Hara returned to the cultural forefront in her 60s with “Schitt’s Creek.”

Her portrayal of the flamboyant, fallen socialite Moira Rose earned her a second Emmy Award, global acclaim, and a new generation of fans. The series, co-starring Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, and Annie Murphy, became a cultural phenomenon and a landmark in inclusive storytelling.

Final Roles and Reflections

In recent years, O’Hara continued to work at the highest level, appearing in:

  • “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (2025), reprising Delia Deetz
  • Apple’s action thriller “Argylle”
  • HBO’s “The Last of Us”
  • Apple TV+’s “The Studio,” where she played a displaced Hollywood executive

Speaking to Variety in 2025, O’Hara reflected candidly on the industry she had witnessed evolve:

“It must be a much more nervous business now than in the past. The internet and streaming opened a world of good — and horrific — possibilities. But most people still want to do good work. And most people want to be entertained.”

A Beloved Figure Beyond the Screen

Though Canadian by birth, O’Hara became deeply associated with Los Angeles. In 2021, she was named honorary mayor of Brentwood, reflecting her impact far beyond entertainment.

She is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, their sons Matthew and Luke, and her siblings Michael, Mary Margaret, Maureen, Marcus, Tom, and Patricia.

A Legacy That Endures

Catherine O’Hara’s legacy is not just one of awards or iconic roles, but of fearless creativity, collaboration, and timeless humor. Few performers managed to remain relevant — and revered — across so many eras of entertainment.

She didn’t just make audiences laugh. She changed how comedy could feel.
