New Delhi: For Sara Arjun, the transition from child actor to leading lady was never a question of if, but when. With Aditya Dhar’s blockbuster spy thriller Dhurandhar, the 20-year-old actor has finally stepped into the spotlight—and she’s doing it with the quiet confidence of someone who has been preparing for this moment her entire life.

“I really wanted this to happen,” Sara says. “But it was always a question of how and when. Now I feel like all those questions have been answered.”

While audiences are discovering her as the romantic lead opposite Ranveer Singh, Sara is far from a newcomer. Despite her young age, she brings nearly two decades of on-screen experience—making her one of the most seasoned debuting female leads in recent Hindi cinema.

A Career That Began Before She Could Remember

Sara’s journey into films began almost by chance. The daughter of actor Raj Arjun, known for his impactful supporting roles in films like Black Friday, Raees, Shershaah, and Secret Superstar, she was spotted at a mall as a child and soon began appearing in television commercials.

At just five years old, she made her film debut in the acclaimed Tamil drama Deiva Thirumagal (2011), playing Nila, the daughter of actor Vikram.

“I don’t remember the technicalities, but I remember being loved,” Sara recalls. “I called him Vikram Appa then—and I still do.”

Growing Up on Film Sets

From there, Sara’s career unfolded steadily across industries. She appeared in Tamil films like Chithirayil Nilachoru, and Hindi films including Ek Thi Daayan (2013) and Jai Ho (2014), where she played a schoolgirl with a prosthetic arm.

“Jai Ho was the first time I did prosthetic work,” she remembers. “That really stayed with me.”

Her performances as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s daughter in Jazbaa (2015) and later collaborations with the late Irrfan Khan in The Song of Scorpions (2017) further cemented her reputation as a natural performer. She also portrayed the younger version of Aishwarya’s character in Mani Ratnam’s epic Ponniyin Selvan films.

“She remembered me even years later,” Sara says of Aishwarya. “She’s incredibly genuine and nurturing.”

Why Being a Child Actor Helped

Unlike many actors who struggle to unlearn fear, Sara believes starting young gave her a creative advantage.

“When you’re a child, emotions are pure,” she explains. “You don’t overthink. I’ve tried to hold on to that honesty, and it really helps.”

Landing Dhurandhar

Getting Dhurandhar was no overnight miracle. Sara went through multiple audition rounds, unaware at first that she was testing for Aditya Dhar’s high-profile espionage drama—or that she might be cast opposite Ranveer Singh.

“I owe everything to Mukesh Chhabra,” she says. “I must have given six auditions. I had no idea where it would lead.”

When the final call came, she shared the news only with her parents and brother. “Grateful and blessed—that’s all I felt.”

Addressing the Age-Gap Debate

In Dhurandhar, Sara plays Yalina Jamali, the daughter of a powerful Pakistani politician, who falls in love with Ranveer’s character, Hamza. The age gap between the actors sparked debate—but Sara believes the film addresses it clearly.

“The ages are specified in the story. It’s rooted in the reality of that world,” she says. “For me, it was always justified within the narrative.”

Fame, Fear, and the Future

With Dhurandhar crossing ₹1,300 crore worldwide, Sara’s life has changed overnight. Fame brings scrutiny, loss of privacy, and relentless attention—but she says she’s prepared.

“I always knew this would happen,” she admits. “I’ve waited for it. I protect my personal life by speaking less about it—and beyond that, I’m okay with everything.”

With Dhurandhar: Part Two set to release in March and a cast featuring Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun’s journey is entering its most defining phase yet.

And for her, it feels exactly right.
