If you’re noticing more hair strands on your pillow, in the shower drain, or tangled in your brush despite eating better or switching hair-care products, the issue may have less to do with shampoo — and more to do with your health.

According to Dr Brijmohan Arora, a Dwarka-based diabetologist with over 24 years of clinical experience, hair loss in women is usually preventable and often reversible, provided the underlying cause is identified early.

In an Instagram video shared on 12 November, Dr Arora explained that hair fall in women is rarely a disease on its own, but rather a visible symptom of internal imbalances.

“Hair loss in women is often a symptom, not a disease,” he said.

Men vs Women: A Key Difference in Hair Loss

Dr Arora highlighted an important distinction between male and female hair loss.
In men, hair loss is often genetic, progressive, and sometimes unavoidable. In women, however, most cases are linked to correctable health issues.

“In women, hair loss is generally preventable and reversible — especially if the root cause is detected early,” he explained.

Common Causes of Hair Loss in Women

According to Dr Arora, the most frequent triggers include nutritional deficiencies and hormonal issues, such as:

  • Thyroid disorders
  • Vitamin B deficiency
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Iron deficiency
  • Zinc deficiency
  • Occasionally, magnesium deficiency

He also pointed to dietary habits, warning against what he described as carbohydrate toxicity.

“Consuming too much junk food and processed carbohydrates can contribute to hair loss,” he noted.

In addition, factors such as chronic stress, crash dieting, hormonal changes, post-illness recovery, and metabolic imbalances can disrupt the hair growth cycle and accelerate hair fall in women.

What To Do If You’re Experiencing Hair Fall

Rather than relying on random supplements or viral home remedies, Dr Arora advises a more scientific approach.

He recommends:

  • Identifying hormonal or thyroid imbalances

“Don’t try to fix it with random supplements or home remedies. Get tested. Find the root cause. Treat it right,” he stressed.

Experts agree that early intervention significantly improves outcomes. When deficiencies or metabolic issues are corrected in time, hair regrowth is often achievable, especially in women.
