Madonna Sebastian on a Decade in Cinema: “I Had to Teach Myself That It’s OK to Be Seen”

Ten years after her breakthrough performance in Premam, actor-singer Madonna Sebastian looks back at a decade shaped by learning, self-discovery, and quiet resilience. In an industry built on visibility, she admits that confidence did not come naturally — it had to be learned.

“I’m blessed that I go to work happy,” Madonna says, reflecting on her journey so far. “Over the years, you realise how little you actually know. That’s when the desire to explore more begins — to see what you’re truly capable of.”

‘Premam Changed Everything for Me’

Madonna credits Premam with transforming not just her career, but her personality. “It changed everything, and it wasn’t planned — just like most good things in life,” she says.

Before cinema happened to her, Madonna describes herself as extremely reserved. “I was very shy and passive. Even though I grew up doing music and television, I wanted to be invisible. Entering the film industry meant stepping out of my comfort zone and teaching myself that it’s okay to be seen.”

‘I Once Skipped Collecting an Award Because I Was Too Shy’

One of her most revealing admissions comes from the early days of her career. “I didn’t collect an award once because I was too shy to go on stage,” she recalls. “Today, I understand why those moments matter.”

Madonna says she has always viewed herself more as an artist than a celebrity. “I believed I was there to express art, not to be celebrated. But over time, I’ve learnt that acknowledging recognition is also part of respecting the work.”

New Films: Heartin and Adhirshtasaali

On the professional front, Madonna has wrapped up two contrasting projects. The upcoming romantic comedy Heartin is, in her words, “a soft love story that’s easy on the heart.”

She has also completed shooting for Adhirshtasaali, directed by Mithran R Jawahar and starring Madhavan. “It was shot in Scotland and London using sync sound, which added a lot of realism to the performances,” she shares.

Choosing Films: ‘I Do the Math — Not the Money’

When it comes to selecting projects, Madonna trusts her instincts but values clarity. “Within five minutes, you usually know whether a film feels right. But I still take time to do the math — not financial math, but weighing the pros and cons.”

She adds that she prefers quick decisions. “I take just a day to decide because I don’t like keeping people waiting.”

On Networking, Social Media, and Authenticity

Madonna believes visibility alone does not guarantee opportunities. “You have to be yourself — you can’t trick the audience. If you’re not authentic, they’ll know.”

While acknowledging the importance of being seen, she remains grounded. “I don’t think a director will call you just because you network or stay active on social media. Talent and truth still matter.”
