Ageing is often accepted as an unavoidable decline—something dictated by genetics and time. Fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, and weight gain are commonly dismissed as “normal” parts of getting older. But according to an experienced cardiologist, that belief may be holding people back from ageing well.

Dr Sanjay Bhojraj, MD, a board-certified interventional cardiologist and functional medicine physician with more than 20 years of clinical experience, believes that ageing better than previous generations is not about luck. Instead, it is largely determined by how early and how consistently people care for their cardiovascular and cellular health.

In a recent social media video, he shared five practical principles he regularly discusses with patients who want to feel stronger, sharper, and more energetic as they age.

Why Ageing Starts Earlier Than You Think

After two decades in cardiology, Dr Bhojraj says one key insight stands out: most people only start paying attention to ageing once symptoms appear.

“Fatigue, brain fog, and unexplained weight changes are often treated as the beginning of ageing,” he explains. “But the cardiovascular system starts ageing long before these signs show up.”

The encouraging part, he adds, is that early action can slow—or even reverse—some aspects of this process.

1. Know Your Cardiovascular Age

Chronological age tells only part of the story. According to Dr Bhojraj, advanced diagnostic tests can reveal how old your arteries actually are.

Understanding cardiovascular age helps identify early decline before it turns into disease. “When you know where your heart health stands, you can take targeted steps to improve it,” he notes.

2. Train Your Heart Like a Muscle

Heart health is not built through appearance-focused workouts alone. Dr Bhojraj recommends a balanced routine that combines:

  • Resistance training for strength and metabolism
  • Low-impact cardiovascular exercise for endurance and circulation

“You’re not chasing aesthetics,” he explains. “You’re building resilience, stamina, and long-term cardiovascular capacity.”

3. Support Nitric Oxide Production Naturally

Nitric oxide plays a crucial role in keeping blood vessels flexible and improving blood flow. To support its natural production, Dr Bhojraj highlights three simple habits:

  • Regular movement
  • Adequate hydration
  • Consuming nitrate-rich foods such as leafy greens and beets

These steps help maintain arterial flexibility and cellular energy over time.

4. Reduce Silent Inflammation

Not all threats to healthy ageing are obvious. Chronic inflammation caused by stress, poor sleep, and highly processed foods can accelerate ageing faster than the calendar.

“A healthy gut, quality sleep, and stress regulation go much further than people realise,” Dr Bhojraj explains, emphasizing that recovery is just as important as activity.

5. Test, Don’t Guess

Rather than relying on assumptions, Dr Bhojraj encourages people to understand their bodies through proper testing.

“Knowing your hormone levels and metabolic profile gives you control over how you age—not just how you feel today,” he says. Personalised insights allow for more effective, long-term health decisions.

Ageing With Intention, Not Fear

Dr Bhojraj sums up his philosophy simply: ageing well is not about avoiding age, but about owning it.

“When you take care of your heart, everything else starts to fall into place—your energy, focus, hormones, and longevity,” he notes. “That’s how you age better than your parents.”
