Mumbai, India – Actor Genelia Deshmukh recently shared insights into her gradual shift from a non-vegetarian diet to veganism during a conversation with Soha Ali Khan on her YouTube channel. Reflecting on her early experiences with vegetarian food, she said:
“I didn’t know any better. I was born in a non-vegetarian family. I only knew peas, potatoes and paneer as vegetarian food.”
Giving Up Meat: The First Step
Genelia revealed that she gave up meat in 2017, following her husband Riteish Deshmukh, who quit meat in 2016. Initially, she remained lacto-vegetarian, still consuming dairy, eggs, and cheese.
“People often associate this with spirituality, but my first step toward being vegan was selfish—I thought it would be better for my health,” she said.
The Journey Toward a Fully Vegan Diet
The transition toward fully plant-based eating happened later, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple decided to eliminate all animal products after observing how even small amounts of dairy affected their digestion and satiety.
“Riteish started feeling amazing. Every time we had a little milk or butter on our roti, we felt full. You never realise the things you are eating every day and how they affect your body,” Genelia explained.
She also spoke about the physical and emotional changes that accompanied her vegan journey, noting improved digestion, lighter meals, and a more disciplined approach to eating.

Kanikka Malhotra, dietitian and diabetes educator, highlighted common nutritional blind spots when transitioning from a non-vegetarian diet:
- Protein diversity: Include lentils, quinoa, tofu, nuts, and seeds
- Vitamins & minerals: Monitor B12, iron, omega-3s, and calcium
- Absorption tips: Pair iron-rich foods like spinach with vitamin C from citrus for better uptake
- Supplements: Consider algae-based omega-3 and fortified foods
Malhotra adds that reducing animal products often lightens digestion, increases fibre intake, and stabilises blood sugar. Plant-based proteins also enhance satiety, which explains why Genelia and Riteish felt fuller after cutting dairy.
Final Thoughts
Genelia’s journey reflects a gradual, health-focused approach to veganism, showing that lifestyle changes can start small and evolve over time. Her story also underscores the importance of nutritional planning, especially for those transitioning from non-vegetarian diets.
“On the way to becoming a vegan, I realised it’s connected to a zillion things—health, babies, compassion for animals. You discover new ways to enjoy food without harming anyone,” she concluded.
