Avatar: Fire and Ash Sees Drop on First Monday in India Despite Solid Worldwide Start

James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third chapter in the globally successful sci-fi franchise, recorded a noticeable dip in its India box office collections on its first Monday, according to early trade estimates.

As per industry tracking platform Sacnilk, the film earned approximately Rs 8.50 crore nett in India on Monday. With this, its total India collection stands at Rs 75.75 crore nett so far. The drop comes after a relatively strong opening weekend, reflecting the typical weekday slowdown but also indicating stiffer competition and high audience expectations associated with the Avatar brand.

Released in theatres on December 19, Fire and Ash opened well across several overseas territories. Markets such as China, India, Turkey, Ukraine, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand contributed significantly to its initial momentum, underscoring the franchise’s continued global appeal.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film has earned USD 89.16 million in the United States to date, while its worldwide gross stands at USD 347.34 million. However, the figures remain below the opening performance of its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water, which collected USD 441 million globally during its opening weekend in 2022.

In terms of opening weekend numbers, Fire and Ash also trails behind Disney’s animated blockbuster Zootopia 2, which posted a record-breaking USD 560 million earlier this year. The film is further behind China’s animated hit Ne Zha 2, which earned USD 431 million during its opening weekend following its January 29 release.

Avatar: Fire and Ash sees Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington reprising their roles as Na’vi warrior Neytiri and former Marine Jake Sully, respectively. The story follows the duo as they confront a new threat on Pandora that puts their family in danger. The ensemble cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet.

Despite the mixed box office comparisons, the film has already received recognition on the awards circuit, earning a Golden Globe nomination in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category.

The Avatar franchise remains one of the most lucrative in cinema history. The original Avatar (2009) continues to be the highest-grossing film of all time, with worldwide earnings exceeding USD 3.5 billion, while The Way of Water ranks as the third highest-grossing film ever, with over USD 2.3 billion globally.

James Cameron has already confirmed that the fourth and fifth instalments of the franchise are currently in development, signalling that Pandora’s cinematic journey is far from over.
