‘This Is Australia, Not India’: Woman Faces Backlash for Calling Sydney Diwali Lights a Threat to Western Culture

A woman in Australia has sparked massive online outrage after claiming that Diwali light displays in Sydney are a “threat to Western culture.” The comments, made on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), were condemned by thousands of users who accused her of promoting xenophobia and intolerance.

Diwali Lights in Sydney Trigger Controversy

The controversy began when a user identified as Kobie Thatcher posted a video showing several houses in Sydney’s Nirimba Fields suburb decorated with colourful lights for Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

In her caption, she wrote:

“These houses are not lit up for Christmas. They are lit up for Diwali. Just about everyone in this neighbourhood of Nirimba Fields is Indian. The West has reached a pivotal moment. We must preserve our own culture before we lose it.”

In a follow-up post, she doubled down, writing:

“Some Hindus in Australia are now calling for Diwali to become an official public holiday. No. This is Australia, not India. We will not change our country to mirror the one you chose to leave.”

Social Media Users Condemn the Remarks

Thatcher’s comments went viral and were met with strong backlash. Many Australians and global users came forward in defence of cultural diversity, unity, and mutual respect.

One user wrote:

“That is the best example of hardworking people accepting Australia as their home while maintaining their traditions. Indians contribute immensely to the economy and live peacefully.”

Another replied:

“So you’re against lights and joy being shared with the community you live in?”

Others urged understanding over division:

“Preserve your culture by embracing diversity, not attacking it.”
“This isn’t about losing culture—it’s about fear of inclusion.”
“Diwali is celebrated by Australians too, just like Christmas or Easter.”

Several commenters also pointed out that multiculturalism is one of Australia’s greatest strengths.

“If Australia is yours, it belongs equally to all citizens. Lights bring joy, not division—unless you choose to see it that way,” one person noted.

Australia’s Growing Diwali Celebrations

Diwali celebrations have been growing across Australia, with major landmarks in cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane illuminated in vibrant colours each year. The festival, celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

Many Australians, regardless of their background, participate in Diwali events to share in the festive spirit—an embodiment of the country’s multicultural ethos.

Celebrating Diversity, Not Division

The incident reignited discussions around multicultural harmony and inclusion in modern Australia. Social commentators pointed out that embracing diverse traditions doesn’t weaken a nation’s identity—it strengthens it.

As one comment summed up:

“Australia’s culture has always evolved through diversity. Festivals like Diwali only add more light to that story.”
